“Wonderful Experience”
Reviewed March 8, 2013

My husband and I started and ended our seventeen day Panama vacation at Los Cuatro Tulipanes in Casco Viejo. We spent three nights at the beginning of our trip and were so happy to be able to return for the final two nights of our vacation. We stayed in Casa Las Monjas 2A and were very comfortable. The room is large with a kitchen and a nice bathroom. This small hotel is in a renovated building with beautiful tile, old stone walls and a great deal of charm.

The staff is very friendly, helpful, and eager to please. Matt, Paula and Ivana all welcomed us and were available to assist us in every way. They arranged for their driver Blas to pick us up at the airport when we arrived and for him to drive us to the airport for our departure flight. Blas was just great. He spent many hours driving us around Panama City to all of the places we wanted to visit. He speaks English and is knowledgable about the history of his city. Blas was always punctual and dependable which made our vacation more enjoyable.

We loved the energy of the surrounding neighborhood. Some of the buildings have been restored and some are still in decay which just adds to the interest of the area.. There are great restaurants, nice shops and a lot of wonderful sights. This is a photographers paradise.

It was so nice to host you guys! Great energy from travelers themselves is just as important as that which emanates from the neighborhood! Hope to have you back soon!

We stayed for one week in a one bedroom apartment in the Casco Viejo facility. The apartment was very nice had two bathrooms, laundry room, kitchen, dining room, family room, wi-fi and use of a cell phone for local calls. The maids came daily and changed linens and washed any dishes in the sink. Although many of the apartments have been updated they are older and the level of cleanliness is a bit different then in U.S. but they were still very nice and liveable. They are also air conditioned which was very nice when trying to sleep and relax given the heat and humility there.

The Tulipanes folks were all very friendly and nice. Ivana was very helpful with our inquires of various sites to see, restaurants, etc.. They also have a driver you can hire to drive you to various places if you need. Their driver brought us to and from the airport which was nice so we didn't need to hassle flagging taxi's down.

The apartments are located in a nice area where we were able to walk to many restaurants and shops. We took taxi's for other day excursions to Amadour Causway, Gamboa rainforest, Portebello, etc... It is only a block or so to the waters edge. Not water for swimming though but nice to look out over and you have nice view of Panama City.

There is a lot of construction going on in Casco Viejo to restore this beautiful historical town. The buildings have incredible architecture and although the construction was sometimes inconvenient it was nice to see them restoring it.

We had a lovely trip.

From our first contact, Matt and Paula could not have been more helpful or accommodating. Not only did they make our stay at Cuatro Tulipanes comfortable, but they gave us advice on what to do around Panama City and for the remainder of our travels through Panama. They even helped us retrieve a bag left behind by the airline. We arrived on Christmas Eve, so they helped to make those days special - especially due to the fact that most attractions/restaurants were closed down. One of the maids made the best rum cakes we've ever tasted! You won't be disappointed!

It would waste your time to repeat what other reviewers have complimented and described, but I will verify that it's all true and well-deserved. We are independent, budget (senior) travelers and seldom venture into a multi-night or vacation rental property, especially first visit to a new location. But staying 3 nights at Los Tulipanes in December clearly influenced our opinion of Panama City and especially, Casco Viejo. We opted out of some ventures just to savor the architecture, fantastic restaurants and charming folk. Yes it's safe, just use common sense, crazy with construction/restorations and practice your Spanish. No problem at the apartments with Paula (who is Panamanian with perfect English) or Matt and Evan, who will probably take care of your reservations. The wonderful housekeeping staff speak limited English but smiles go along way and driver Blas' English is coming along nicely.

Don't make the mistake we did by not using Blas as your designated cab driver. We spent our first night in a downtown PC hotel, which we enjoyed but did overspend a bit on cab fare from the airport and REALLY got gouged on a trip to see Panama Viejo and delivered to Casco Viejo. Could have afforded another dinner at Manolo Caracol's for the difference!

Only one suggestion about our beautiful studio apartment is there was not a table or desk to use for work space (and there is plenty room). The bar that separates the kitchen is fine for eating, but not conducive for using laptops, etc. Maybe taller bar stools would help??

Room Tip: Don't be dis-heartened if you do not have a street view or balcony. The interior patios open sk...

A few friends and I stayed in one of the three bedroom apartments for 4 days. As my headline says, the apartment was gorgeous. The kitchen was well stocked, the water was hot and the beds were comfortable. The best part of the place was our roof deck. We would get a few bottles of wine and just sit there every night, relaxing after a day of sight-seeing.

Another benefit of Los Cuatro Tulipanes is that it was extremely quiet. The Casco Viejo neighborhood is basically under construction right now and there is lot of noise on the streets. Despite this fact, the apartment was completely quiet.

Finally, Matt and his Team were super friendly and helpful. They were always around (there is a management office in the lobby) to answer questions, help with transportation and give recommendations.

Cuatro Tulipanes is where it's at. I wouldn't stay anywhere else.

We stayed one week in a very comfortable two bedroom first floor apartment with fully equipped kitchen in the heart of Casco Viejo. It was a fantastic location, lots bars and restaurants within a short walking distance and a short cab hop to Panama City, national parks and the canal. Customer service was to a very high standard. Many thanks to Paula, Matt and Blas.

I recently stayed in the 2 bedroom apartment with my husband and three sons. We were met at the door by our hosts Mat and Paula, led to our room where there was a cold beverage waiting. The service and hospitality never let up. We had them to answer questions and lend a hand at any moment. The apartment was beautiful, clean and had everything we needed (including a washer and dryer). I could have stayed there for a month, and plan on going back.

It's safe to say that there are families who have traveled and who really jive with the vibe in Casco Viejo and then there are families who don't. These guys were definitely the former. They topped off a great visit with a special dinner that included a tour of the kitchen for the youngsters (total foodies). Special times call for special measures!! Come back soon!
