This hotel has 15 rooms, but only 3 were available. The others were being remodeled but this didn’t bother us. The lobby was a little like “Alice in Wonderland” but enjoyable. The staff was fabulous and breakfast was made to order. Our room had a magnificent view of Panama City across the bay. They were building a new hotel across the street and possibly this would hinder the view in the future. It was a two story room on the third floor….. bed & tv and powder room on the first floor, then a spiral staircase to the second floor with a TV sitting room and a full bathroom. This could be a problem for some people. It also has a roof top bar that had the same view as our room ….. but still fun to go for a glass of wine.

We arrived mid Feb 2016 the last day of Carnaval. We were warmly greeted by Jose and all the staff, our room was 2 story suite on the waterfront side. Great for viewing the fireworks of Carnival. The room was beautiful and clean with a terrace that looked out on a busy city street. Breakfast every morning was delicious with our waiter making special coffee and fruit juices for us every day. The staff gave us delicious restaurant suggestions and called for all taxis we needed. We speak very limited Spanish but we had no problem conversing with the staff. We checked out of the hotel at the end of our visit and flew to Bocas del Toro for a week. We returned to Panama City at the end of the week to fly home but due to a mistake made on our flight we were delayed a day. Luckily we returned to Villa Palma and Jose was able to give us another beautiful room for the night. I travel alot and when I am looking for a hotel I look for cleanliness, location and price. Villa Palma was great on all 3 points. I had none of the problems that others had experienced. The construction across the street did not generate alot of noise and the work took place during the day when we were not in the room. I would strongly recommend this hotel to anyone planning a visit to Panama City.

We booked this hotel in Oct 2015 based on TripAdvisor reviews available then -- which gave generally glowing accounts. Fast forward a few months when we finally arrived at Villa Palma in early Feb 2016 (during Carnaval) . . . the story is just adequate, and far from compelling.

PROS

a) We booked a studio, but got upgraded to a top floor 2-level suite! Great views from our balcony of the Panama City skyline. Ditto for watching the fireworks displays during Carnaval.

b) Wonderful location! You're steps from the waterfront area, and amazingly convenient to all that Casco Viejo has to offer.

c) Room had an in-room safe which is always great for storing valuables.

CONS

a) We arrived during Carnaval which we thought would be a busy time for the hotel given that this is a big tourist draw (think elaborate parade floats, dancers in costumes and a 3-day back-to-back street party). However, the hotel was like an empty mausoleum, and barely staffed when we arrived. The staff in attendance seemed to have limited knowledge about what to do to check us in. Their non-existent English and my marginal Spanish didn't help matters either. Moreover, the room and more broadly the hotel itself offered no ready information on basics such as breakfast schedules, wifi password, maps, tourist to-do's, what was open vs closed during the Carnaval holiday, etc. Most hotels would have a 'Welcome to . . .' booklet or packet and this was visibly lacking.

As I noted in my other Panama-related reviews, the tourism / service 'infrastructure' in Panama seems less well developed than in other locations (eg, Mexico, Costa Rica) and the Villa Palma was an expensive example of this. Staff were genuinely trying to help, but fell short probably due to lack of training, techniques, and tools.

b) The showers would run out of hot water (after about 3 min). On our last night, the whole hotel completely ran out of hot water.

c) But when we did have hot water, BOTH taps in the sinks only had hot water. We reported this to the front desk but they were unable to fix the problem.

d) We had to ask to get our room cleaned. When it did get cleaned, toiletries weren't refreshed. Oddly, on the morning we were checking out (and our luggage was still in the room), the cleaning lady was in there changing sheets and towels seemingly unaware that we were leaving.

On a related note : the usual signage generally available in most hotels (eg, 'do not disturb'; 'no need to make up room'; etc) was not available here.

e) Their eMail address (reservas@villapalmapanama.com : which is published on their reservation confirmation) seems not to work since our eMail reconfirming our arrival date and stay was returned as non-deliverable after several attempts. Probably best to just call and try to find the right person.

f) The website photos suggest a botique hotel with funky decor. However, up close it just seemed oddly designed and hastily assembled . . . so don't base your hotel selection on the aesthetic potential.

Some closing notes :

1- There is active construction in front of the hotel. So if you get a street / waterfront-facing room, be prepared for daytime noise and activity

2- If you arrive during Carnaval (or likely any big holiday), tourist bureaus, many shops, restaurants etc will likely be closed, so plan accordingly

Room Tip: rooms facing inner courtyard likely best for now (2016) due to street-facing construction

As of February 2016, this hotel was still under renovation (discretely on the middle floor), and operating as something of a start-up. Parts of it are great -- an elegant lobby, very nice rooms (mine was two-storied with an ocean view for less than $200) with beautiful, traditional decor, a key location in Casco Viejo. Other things were still works-in-progress, apparently -- the included breakfast was not worth having, hot water was inconsistent, service a little disorganized. It's got lots of potential, but not you're the kind of person for whom lapses of this sort would spoil your trip. GET the big two-story suite with the ocean view.

Room Tip: The big two-story suites are fun and huge (with balcony and ocean view), and currently not that much more expensive.

I picked this hotel based on TA reviews and I want to write a good review BUT

pros: good location, beautiful room and very spacious. the manager when we arrived was very welcoming. we had good server in the mornings and very friendly guy from Venezuela. sorry I do not remember the names. nice view from rooftop bar.

cons: we stayed there for 4 nights and the room was cleaned only once. did not leave new shampoo and we had to call the front desk later. we did not enough soap and we need to call for it another day.
the beer glasses that we used on the day we checked in remained in the room when we checked out.
we asked for water one evening and we got them from the friendly night person at the bar but the next night we were charged $10 plus tax for 1 bottle of water and the most expensive water I have had in my life. we have traveled a lot and stayed in expensive places but the hotels usually supply drinking water! after we had to pay for water ( cannot charge it to the room) , we had to use the stairs to our room since elevator was not working, NOT good at all. that evening person never smiled.
I don't think I will recommend or stay there again for that one person ... management need to improve service
