“Excellent experience”

After reading most reviews from TA and elsewhere, wife and I decided to choose Hotel Milan for our Panamenian stay.

If not the cleanest hotel we have ever stayed it is close to it. For Panama, it is a bargain pricewise.

Comfortable beds, hot water, complimentary bottled water, large room, friendly personnel. Ms. Ana Carballeda, a young and attractive manager was very prompt in answering e-mails and positive in her answers.

If you pay in cash you get a discount.

Rules are very strict and I presume anybody who cannot abide by those rules should definitely NOT use this hotel, but otherwise, I think it is really great.

No pets, no smoking, payment in advance, no visitors in bedroom, no same sex two persons as guests.

Overall experience was excellent.

Restaurant attached to the hotel serves mostly regular clients from the street. You can see the clients are regular clients, which attests to good quality/prices.

For the price paid, it is a bargain.

We made our reservations via the hotel's website using Google translator and received a prompt reply. When we booked this hotel, we were expecting something along the lines of a Motel 6 in the US....small, uncomfortable beds, a bit run down but the RIGHT PRICE. We booked for three nights and paid in cash to receive a 20 (or was it 25)% discount. We were ushered to our room by an efficient bellman and were quite surprised to see a spacious room with marble floors, a large bathroom with a HUGE shower, and a safe in the closet. My husband was very happy to find fast, FREE WIFI. The attached restaurant was small, but very reasonable and the food was delicious with very generous portions.

The only drawbacks we saw: the staff speak very little English and we speak NO Spanish. But, with the help of a Spanish dictionary and a lot of gesturing, we were able to get our points across. Also, the hotel policy requires you to leave your key at the front desk when you go out. Also, visitors must stay in the lobby. But neither of these polices were a problem for us. The beds were also a bit hard but much better than many we have slept on during our world travels.

The location was nice in that we could easily walk to restaurants, stores, markets, salons, and pharmacies. The neighborhood is as safe as any downtown section of any major metropolitan area. If you have been to either Manila or San Jose, Cost Rica, you will definitely feel much safer here. Just use common sense when out and about.

Overall, the Hotel Milan was a great experience and we will stay here again on our next visit to Panama City.

I stayed here for two nights late last month. Overall, I was very pleased. Among the pros of the hotel:

1) Great location only a block from the Wyndam casino.

2) Very fair price of $49.50 for an economy room, which was more than fine.

3) Free computer to use in lobby.

4) Good hot water and water pressure.

5) Air conditioning in the room worked fine.

Among the cons:

1) Staff would control the air conditioning from the lobby, and you often had to go down there to tell them to turn it back on.

2) Pillows and bedding were of an inferior quality.

Overall though, I would stay here again if my travels ever brought me back to Panama City.

We stayed at several places in Panama City: Luna's Castle Hostel in Casco Viejo as well as La Estancia in Cerro Ancon. Hotel Milan was my fave for a few reasons. You can check in at any time and cabs know where it is, so it's a great place to go when you're first flying in. It's SAFE. The neighborhood is great and there's 24/7 security/staff. The place is clean. It doesn't have the same character as other places, but it makes up for it in location and cleanliness. When you wake up you're a three block walk from El Trapiche and a bunch of other great restaurants on Via Argentina. You're super close to catching Diablo Rojos (local buses) racing down Via Espana or a cab.

Staying in Casco Viejo was nice because it's very atmospheric, but it didn't always feel safe. Plus, you either have to deal with hostel nonsense or pay a fortune. La Estancia has more character but you're a minimum $5 cab away from EVERYTHING and not all cabbies are as familiar with Cerro Ancon. From Hotel Milan in El Cangrejo neighborhood, you're really central and can walk many places.

Plus, we didn't have a car (nor would I want to drive in Panama City! It's NUTS!) but there was a nice, safe, parking garage on site if you do drive. Not sure whether or not you paid extra for that...

We are in Panama 6 months a year and have been staying at the Milan for the last three years, once a week during the months we are there because we live in another part of Panama. We have stayed in many areas of Panama City in other hotels only when we can't get a room at the Milan. The Milan is located in the El Cangrejo or Hotel Panama area, which is centrally located within walking distance of many restaurants, shopping and businesses. The Milan has sparkling clean rooms, Wi-Fi (6th & 7th floor plug ins), a very secure garage, a restaurant, ice on every floor and hot showers. There are several taxi drivers that are always outside the Milan. You can make reservations for airport pickups with them. Also, there are many great restaurants across the street and in the same block.

Hotel rooms in Panama City are booked for weeks ahead. The key is making a reservation first and then make your shopping/appointment plans around the reservation. Hotels are less from Monday thru Thursday. Prices vary depending on many factors including the Resident Jubilado or Pensionado cards. The Milan is an example of how Panama hotel rates vary depending on the day of the week, whether you pay in cash and other factors.

There are 3 different size rooms: economica (no safe or couch), the standard (safe, couch and bigger) and the suite (safe, refrigerator/freezer & huge bath tub). There are 4 rates for each of these rooms which are fairly standard type rates for Panama. The regular rate (all include 10%tourism tax) for economica $66; for standard $77 & for suite $99. The cash rate is $49.50, $57.75 & $74.25. The Pensionado Rate (card is necessary) from Mon. thru Thurs. is $33, $38.50 & $49.50. The Pensionado Rate on Fri., Sat. & Sun. is $46.20, $53.90 & $69.30.
Although the Milan is nearly always booked, if you call after 2PM you may get a room because of cancellations or other reasons. Anna or Francisco answer emails quickly at [--]

As far as any other services, just ask. We routinely get extra pillows and a reading lamp. As far as the smell from cleaning, we have not had a problem but we do enjoy the immaculate rooms. I will take that any day. The hotel is run by very polite and professional people from Spain and they do not tolerate any wild activities that might disturb guests. It a very quite place where you can get a nights sleep. So if you want wild parties or other rude behavior, you might want to go some place else. There is a casino one block away for those that gamble or want to people watch.

The Milan is currently building a new hotel right next door which will have suites and some other services.

We stayed at Hotel Milan for three nights. It is in a central location - near restaurants shopping, safe, well run. We stayed one night in the regular rooms, then upgrated to the larger room the 2nd and 3rd day. The larger room has frig, huge hot tub in separate room from bathroom and great views. There is a computer with free internet, free parking if you need it (covered inside), very very clean!! comfortable beds room service and little restaruant with good food and delicious fruit shakes.

I stayed in Hotel Milan in February 2010 on 3 separate occasions -- 2 nights, 1 night, 1 night while traveling in Panama/switching planes between destinations.

I pretty much agree with most reviews. Clean, air-conditioned, well-located, room size 3x typical French B&Bs, good hot water pressure in the shower, WiFi worked very well, and there is also free Internet PC in the lobby. Luckily, I didn't have any issues with staff, but again, I agree, it's not a warm service. You won't get touchy-feely, "Pleasure to see you," "How can we make your stay better?,"Was everything OK with your stay?", etc. kind of questions. Well, I wasn't there to make friends. Overall, I found this hotel to be a very good value. I paid in cash. They ask for payment upfront at check-in. $58 per night.

Also, reservation process was pretty easy. I e-mailed hotel about a month in advance telling them that I'd like to reserve Feb 4-5, Feb 8, and Feb 14, and received a confirmation e-mail within 24 hours. They don't ask for credit card to hold a reservation, which is nice.

When you e-mail them, do it in Spanish. You are much more likely to get a response (faster). If you don't know Spanish (I don't), just copy-paste your e-mail into Google translator, and then just copy-paste Spanish translation into your e-mail to hotel. Once they respond in Spanish, you can use Google translator to understand what they are saying. I use this method of communicating a lot -- you are more likely to get a (quick) response this way.

p.s. If you ever have any conflicts with them in terms of payment (like one of TripAdvisor member just recently had -- see a couple of posts down ) then just pay by credit card, and then call your credit card company when you come back home, and explain what happened. It's highly likely that credit card company will take these charges off. But, again, it's likely that a bad experience is an anomaly (can happen to anyone at any time, though) rather than a rule.
