Perhaps one of the greatest overhauls Panama city has had over the years has been the transformation of the former Balboa Avenue to the three (3) phases of the new Coastal Strip (Cinta Costera).

The old sights of the former Balboa Avenue are mostly there, the marinas -now there are a few more- the view to the bay and the status of Vasco Nuñez de Balboa (named after him). There are many more attractive spots all along this coastal strip but what is sorely missed is the old status of Anayansi which seems to have gone missing (typical of Panamanians that do NOT value local talents or stuff). Anayansi was an indian from an indigenous tribe of Panama that became Vasco Nuñez de Balboa's wife and it was perhaps because of that that he did not turn out to be a sanguinary like Pedrarias Davila (who had him beheaded out of greed and jealousy).

In the coastal strip (CInta Costera) you can go walking all along the way, you can also bring your bicycle and use the cyclist path from one end to the other. There are places to warm up with exercise machines/devices, game courts, fountains, etc. There is a something for everyone and it is a commonplace for friends and family.

A word of caution though... although there is a police station and policemen scouting the coastl strip you have to keep your eyes open because as you approach Casco Viejo there are some poor areas and thieves sometimes use the Cinta Costera to steal or assault those that are not careful enough.

This is a farily new new feature in the city. Amazing project really from Odebrecht.

People go to Balboa for lots of reason on the weekend and for running. I am a runner, I tried but it's pretty painful, too humid.

If you have kids, I guess taking them there is good, lots of grass and parks, but HOT....

The marina is not open for people without boats so >:(

Panama City has one of the best sky lines, and this is the prefect way to take it in. The paths are wide and clean. The landscaping is done very well. Really, this is quite a nice walk to do. All of the skyscrapers are on show. The water is right along the other side of the path.

A drive down Avenida Balboa around 12:30 on Monday wasn't a great idea. Lots of traffic. Although an evening drive down was rather pleasant offering nice views of the water. Lots of people out for an evening walk. Nice views of the office buildings in the nights sky.
