Description: Savor the essence of authentic Panama at Salsipuedes Restaurant, the marvelous new restaurant located within Bristol Panama hotel. Under the direction of renowned Executive Chef Cuquita Arias de Calvo, Salsipuedes offers a rich showcase of gourmet Panamanian cuisine. The restaurant’s name honors Panama City’s legendary - and sometimes notorious -Salsipuedes Street, which has been a city landmark since 1671. Today, up and down the street, you can find Chinese and Panamanian merchants offering handmade crafts, Panamanian clothing, montunos, hats, books, magazines, school supplies, articles, Jewelry, vegetables, fruits, dishes, pots, pans, medicinal plants, teapots, among other items. In this regard, Salsipuedes Street and Salsipuedes Panama City Restaurant share several traits. Each celebrates the spirit of the Panamanian culture and is as cheerful and spicy as the people themselves.

You won't go wrong with this beautiful, modern restaurant in the Bristol hotel. It is nicely decorated with very attentive wait staff. The menu is diverse with servings that will please most taste. They have a large wine list but a bit pricy for Panama city. The restaurant bar is small and it's staff seems a little aluff.

We got to the restaurant a little early one evening for dinner and the hostess agreed to seat us anyway. As we were moving toward our table, the manager rushed over and rudely dismised us announcing they were closed. For such a fine hotel & restaurant, he could have handled the situation much more professionally.

Reluctantly we returned later and enjoyed our food emensly. The food was outstanding in presentation, quantity and taste. We liked it so much we returned a few days later for lunch and sat in the bar. The bar menu was not as extensive but ample. Again we had a terrific meal. The only problem was the bar wait staff was distracted (talking, checking phone messages, etc.) and we had a difficult time getting our bill. I finally went up to the bar and learned the credit card machine was broke. I suggested they use another hotel machine which they did and I finally got to leave.

The quality of the restaurant food however would bring me back again despite my mishaps.

First, this restaurant is in the Bristol Hotel, Panama City, Panama, not Florida,
Second, it recently changed its name to Sal Si Puedas.

On to the review. This is the worst dining experience I can remember having in a very long time; especially for a high-end restaurant.

The service was cringingly bad. The servers were mostly well intentioned, but extremely inexperienced. The food was more miss than hit.

1. The waiter took our food order, but then had to be prompted to give us the wine list and then to take our wine order. (We weren't offered a cocktail either.) We ordered a wine. It came after we were half-way through our first course.

2. When we were getting towards the end of the bottle, the waiter distributed it between three of us, leaving the fourth with an almost empty glass. He then asked if we wanted another bottle.

3. The wine list itself was very short, not particularly well chosen and certainly not in keeping with the aspirations of the restaurant.

4. The roast vegetable dish appetizer was ill conceived. Too many chips and overly pickled vegetables.

5. This mistake made me laugh: The dish of jerked (actually "pulled") veal was served with rice and beans on a banana leaf. The rice and beans were meant to be molded into an oblong. The kitchen left the (unattractive) aluminum molds over the rice and beans. I can only assume that they were prepared in advance and no one told the servers that they were meant to be removed.

6. The chocolate ice cream had had so many freeze thaw cycles it had large ice crystals in it. We told the first waiter (I am not sure that he understood English), he just went and stood in the corner. We then told our second waiter. He took it away as requested. When the bill came, the charge for the ice cream was on it. He seemed a little surprised that we wanted the charge removed, but took it off with good grace.

7. We were not offered coffee or after dinner drinks.

As an aside, we saw another dinner (clearly a long term repeat Bristol Hotel guest), so incensed that the rolls were stale, that he got up and took one to show the hostess (this also made me laugh).

Four appetizers, one sparkling water, four entrees and two desserts $195.

Service was excellent, and I had a chicken curry dish which was great, overall just lacked a little bit of a wow factor. After so many amazing meals on this trip maybe we were splitting hairs, but that's that!
