I could not disagree more with each of the prior reviews. Panama City is a tough place to find budget housing, and the city is not that easy to navigate, but Terraza is in Pueblo Nuevo, a cab ride from everywhere. Even the local food is a 10-15 minute walk down dirty streets with little or no sidewalks with cars racing by. The food choices are limited to a few spots in a strip mall, but there is a supermarket.
But, the real problem here is the owner, Tania. Although friendly and helpful through email before we arrived, she forgot to arrange the taxi from the airport, despite a reminder the night before our flight. We were left at the airport for an hour while she sent a taxi. When we arrived, we requested help with laundry, info on getting to the canal, and wanting to organize a trip to San Blas (which we discussed on email). She was not helpful on any of it, and instead raced out of the hostal because she had things to do. In her absence, her father manages the place, and although he is very nice, he is not as knowledgable about how she runs things. His response was generally that Tania would be back soon.
When we tried to leave the house to get something to eat, we were stuck inside because there was a padlock on the gate and she was the only one with the key. Her father kept saying she was on her way with the key, but 5 of us were stuck waiting outside for over 30 minutes just to leave. She opened the gate and fled once again, not to return until 4 or 5 hours later, tired and not interested in helping us. When we asked about the San Blas she seemed bothered by our questions. Everything we asked was a trouble to her. She never apologized for not arranging the airport pick up, and she was consistently too busy to help us. In the morning we asked again about laundry. She said she could start it right away. It sat in the laundry room for an hour. We were also waiting to get info on the San Blas from her. Then, we found out she was taking a nap.
Our shared bath looked like it had not been cleaned that day, the floors were dirty throughout.
My husband commented that there were more animals there than employees (at least 2 dogs and a cat). Tania needs to hire someone to man the desk who can help run the hostel. Again, her father is very nice, but he is not staff.
We checked out after that first night and were very happy with our decision to leave.
