“Quick tour - lots to see”
Reviewed December 10, 2013

We took a walking tour of the old city as an excursion from your cruise. New Panama is boring - Old Panama is quaint with interesting architecture and sightseeing. Our guide provided a wonderful narrative of the history of the old city, a lot of which is being restored to it's original condition removing years of wear and tear but keeping the architectural beauty. There are tons of small shops selling the typical tourist items, but also if you look carefully you can find lots of native crafts. Totally enjoyed the visit.

“Must See Neighborhood”
Reviewed December 9, 2013 via mobile

Very interesting little section of the city. Mix between up and coming restaurants and deteriorating ruins. Apparently the city has an ordinance that the façades of the buildings must be maintained but inside you'll often see nothing but rubble. Lots of great little artisan shops, great restaurants, safe place to walk around. Beautiful architecture here.

“Cool Spanish architecture some rehabbed others in ruins”
Reviewed December 8, 2013

It's also called Casco Viejo. It is the neighborhood with the Spanish colonial buildings. It looks a lot like New Orleans' French Quarter. They are rehabbing it and putting in new brick streets. It's a mix of beautiful restored buildings painted in vibrant colors with others that are ruins with trees growing out of the roofs. We first went with a guide for about 45 minutes who explained the history, how it was attacked by British pirates. Afterwards we had lunch at a great Italian restaurant, wandered up and down the streets, stopped for a glass of wine at a sidewalk cafe and then found the path along the water that takes you down the Cinta Costera board walk. We enjoyed it and felt safe in the daytime. There were plenty of police/military and people all around. Nobody ever hassled us, so I don't agree with the people who said it was dangerous. It's not. There are some cool art galleries and a cheesy( but worth the 15 minute detour into) "Emerald Museum" which is on the same square as the Cathedral.

“Awsome day trip”
Reviewed December 8, 2013

great time and great food. Do some homework before you go about where you want to eat and what you wane see so you don't get stuck just wandering around. Its easy to wander away from the tourist area into a more shady part of town so just be aware of where you are. Everyone is very friendly and the sights are great. The view of Panama city at night are awesome too. Enjoy!

“Beauty & the beastly!”
Reviewed December 6, 2013

The old city, or original city of Panama is a strange mixture of nearly ruined old buildings covered with jungle growth and lots of reconstructed spanish colonial style buildings. The government is working to restore this area and once completed, it will be truly lovely. Well worth a visit.
