What a mess. Everything is under construction day and night. You can see everything in about 1 hour. This might one day be a very charming place to visit and spend some time in but not yet. We did find some very good places to eat at night. We stayed three nights here and must say that one does acclimate to the dust and debris. It does look better at night too as the young and well off Panamanians frequent this area to dine and wine.

First you wonder why you see armed policemen on almost every corner because there doesn't appear that there is anything of value around to steal, then you realize that you are the thing being guarded. When you are in an area with no police in sight you start to worry. Don't bother with this one until restoration is complete and the squatters and beggars are removed.

Casco Viejo is heavily written up on line, including a lot of self guided walking tours. What we found is an old town center that had been declared a UNESCO conservation area that was heavily unoccupied except for squatters in older buildings, very few shops, a couple of nice restaurants and some historical locations. We spend about an hour walking around, dodging barriers for utility construction, seeing a couple of sites and not feeling positive enough to return for dinner despite a lot of push to do so from the locals. It's a nice to see attraction to understand the history of the City, but not nearly what the guidebooks and on-line sites make it out to be today. Maybe in ten years, after additional reconstruction and redevelopment, it will be worth another visit.

If you love history, architecture, and the chance to understand how culture developed in Panama then go to the Old City and learn about the oldest settlement in the New World on the pacific. Panama City was founded in 1519 a full 101 years before the Mayflower arrived in New England.

This is a pretty cool part of Panama City, but you will have to go through some pretty seedy neighborhoods to get there. We came from the causway BTW; about $5 via taxi. It is still undergoing it's renovation process so there is not that much to see, but you can walk around and grab a quick bite. There are cops on every corner so safety should not be a worry, although I would recommend going during the day. You're not missing much if you decide not to go, but c'mon...when is the next time you'll be in Panama?
