It's worth seeing but there is so much construction and renovation occurring that it took away from the enjoyment. Great views of the canal and the city from there.

Frankly, there is not a lot to do when visiting Panama City (all the excitement is outside the limits) but this is not to be missed. This was Panama City as it was in all it's glory. The architecture is vintage, the few shops quaint, the food UNBELIEVABLE it's worth a taxi just to come for dinner. The area is still funky with a lot of building with squatters some of who looked pretty sketchy and they live in the streets so be prepared for loud music, kids playing and dogs roaming. A few building are totally empty (except for trees growing in it and garbage). The views of downtown are beautiful and it's a quick walk to the fish market. This is a UN Heritage Site and all the renovations will keep the atmosphere and architecture vintage. My only hesitation is staying there for overnight. In both hotels we stayed in, the neighborhood was very noisy so sleep was difficult for a light sleeper like me.

Go with a guide for safety and for the history. It is a restoration in progress and quite beautiful. Worth a look!

Hey man, not too many places can make that claim. I'm a huge fan of tourism in Panama, and i thought this area was cool. You can probably cover it in under two hours, but if you're in Panama City you have give it a look see. There's a lot of history here. Panama City is a great jumping off point for going out and exploring other parts of the country.

I'm surprised by the rather negative reviews from the same weekend I visited Casco Viejo - twice. The tone of those reviews leads me to believe that the reviewers would be happier at a Disney resort, where everything is clean and tidy. Of course some parts of Casco Viejo are decrepit; it's nearly 400 years old! I've been there several times over the last few years and greatly enjoyed each visit. It is great to see the progress that's being made in restoring the buildings and improving the infrastructure. Don't take a tour of Casco Viejo - or any place else, for that matter. Do some exploring on your own! Stay in a locally owned B&B, inn or hotel. Eat in locally owned restaurants. Meet the people! Expand your horizons - or just lay by the pool at the Decameron until time to leave for home, where you'll probably be much happier.
