The old city covers a relatively small area and is easy to walk around to see eye main sites in a half day. We walked from our hotel at the other side of the bay (Hard Rock) which took about 1 hour along the promenade - and goes via the Fish Market. As everyone has said, the Old Town is undergoing restoration so builders everywhere, but still interesting to see.

This was a stop on a Decameron Explorer city tour and while it was nice to take a stroll and see a few interesting old building exteriors, it was too low-key and haphazard for me - especially since we didn't enter any buildings at all and our guide's highlight was a phonebooth that happened to be used for a shot in a movie. I would've preferred seeing the interior of a church or a government building instead of the one building we got to visit for ten minutes which was a souvenir shop. Perhaps when all the roadwork and sandblasting is done (though many of the buildings look like they haven't been cleaned at all in centuries), the walk will be more pleasant; and perhaps it is even now if you're wandering around at your own pace and with impulsive tangents - but I'd avoid a tour through the old city until whatever-the-heck-they-re-doing-to-it is done. P.S. - Another ill-advised Decameron Explorer feature was that after our Old City/Canal tour we were taken to an upscale duty-free market for forty-five minutes of feeling like we were killing time at the airport.

Old town in Panama could be skipped. There is not much to see and the area is pretty decrepit. Sounds like they are making an effort to turn it around - so maybe in the future it will be better

The Panamanians are in the process of rebuilding and restoring their colonial city so you will find a lot of construction going on but that is a good thing. The restored buildings do look nice. The sidewalks are uneven and there are scaffolds on many buildings so be careful where you walk. A taxi from Panama Viejo to Casco Viejo should cost no more then $3.50. There are some really nice restaurants there where you can have a meal. There is also a lot of tourist police present for your safety.

We are an expat family living here in the old town. We love it very much, the cafeteria, the restaurants, the people,it is like living in a small village somewhere in Italy. Take your time and look closely to the old houses(restored or not) and you will see how beautiful this place was and it will be soon if only the well to do invest more here than in those ugly skyscrapers. Try coming at sunset, the construction people stopped working, not many cars on the street.Enjoy dinner in one of the restaurants around or simply stroll the city,it is safe.
