“Four Points-Panama City, Panama a very good hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 15, 2013

I had stayed in Four Points by Sheraton in States and Canada .But this is by far the best property. The free breakfast was outstanding. It had incredible array of items,In the US if one gets atleast half of these items in the breakfast in any hotel one should consider themselves very lucky. The only complain is the Steam room was out of function.

Like any other big hotels the travel packages they sell is very expensive. The guy in front desk tried to scare me to use the hotel transportation and travel packages siting security situation. A 3 hour sight seeing tour booked through the hotel will cost you 90$. I retained a cab driver who speaks English[I got lucky since very few people speaks English in Panama City] for almost 7 hours which included driving us around to various sightseeing places and a drop off to the airport for 85$. The airport drop off alone could cost 30$

I came to this hotel to attend a conference. Problems started upon arrival: room not ready, my last name wrongly spelled, so it would be hard to locate me, staff not attentive, with an attitude like the guests interrupt whatever they happen to be doing at the time.

But the real problem was on the night of May 10: lights went out a little before midnight, I looked out the window and saw a fire engine, but thought nothing of it, because there have been problems with electricity due to the lack of rain in Panama. No alarms, no messages. A couple hours later, noise, banging, steps, I woke up and a man was saying "We are evacuating, don't be alarmed , it is a preventive measure, come out of your room, only indispensable stuff".
So I came out, could smell smoke, waited for a while for other guests to come and walked down the stairs. Outside people were complaining of lack of information, and eventually the manager came and said that we would be taken to a different hotel for the night and that this was "preventive". I asked if I could go back to get my passport and was told it would be ok. So I went back to the 7th floor and then down again, while other guests came down and the staff supposedly made sure everyone was out.

But nobody had a list of the guests. Nobody asked about your room number. There were no loudspeakers telling people to come out, I was worried I didn't see my colleagues, was told everybody was down and some people had already been taken to the other hotel.
There I was told to wait for some time so they would put their lists together and then they would give the room number of my friends.
It was two in the morning, so instead of insisting, in order not to pester anybody in the middle of the night, I emailed my colleagues, to find out their new room number...and next morning I learned my two colleagues hadn't been evacuated!!!
Forget that nobody contacted people next morning about return to Four Points...their evacuation was so sloppy that some people had been left behind!
Staff had no explanation for this, they were very vague about what had happened the night before and were not attentive.
Later we were told that the power generator had been covered with plywood and this caused the trouble.
Fortunately the incident was self limited,, but I would like to express my deep concern that the lack of training and disregard for the guests wellbeing and safety could've resulted in tragedy.
I think that strong measures should be taken by the management of this property to insure that this doesn't ever happen agin...and the maybe they can do something to improve the attitude of the staff.

I stayed in this hotel May 8-12/13.
First they could not find my reservation (or those of 2 friends later that day) for over an hour.
Then they mis-spelled all our names despite having our passports and did not correct this when it was pointed out. This meant all callers were told we were not guests at that hotel.

We had a power blackout about midnight (May 10-11) but as this was not unusual I went to sleep.I awakened between 1 and 2am smelling burning. I called reception and was told "We had a little problem but it is fixed, so good night! I checked the hall and there was no visible smoke, so silly me, I went to sleep,
At 7am my 2 friends did not answer their phones which was odd and I could still smell a faint odour of burning.. i called switch board to double-check their room numbers (which I thought was correct) but was told they were not guests! I protested then went to reception. They also said they had no record of them. I went to their rooms and pounded on their doors but no answer. I then remembered I had a cell phone number of one of them and called her. She shouted "WHAT ARE YOU DOING IN THERE? THAT HOTEL WAS ORDERED EVACULATED BY THE FIRE DEPT about 2 am!" I confronted the man at reception with this information and he called his colleagues who said they "could not discuss this security issue!" The fire alarm never rang. No one informed me but they claimed everyone was told to leave. I called Sheraton Customer Service in USA today (Nick) and was told that unless I gave him my reservation number he can not take the report. I explained the problem and I asked to speak to his supervisor but was disconnected. I am a Starwood Preferred Customer, so you see the priority on customer service. This incompetence is really dangerous!

After reading the reviews regarding this property I almost changed my mind about staying there as I was worried about the service and the mold smell noted by many reviewers. Overall I would rank it a bit above "Average" and just below "Very Good." I did not notice a mold smell, or any others smells at the hotel and while it is apparent the hotel is not new or modern, I thought it was clean, with spacious guest rooms and friendly, if a bit slow, service. I was able to check in early (12:00) with no issues and the staff gave me helpful advice about the area. I thought the bedding was very comfortable and the bathroom nicely arrange. The work space area was comfortable and well designed. My only issue was that the internet was very inconsistent and the speed and reliability of the internet was dependent on where your room was. It worked about 50% of the time in my room which was very annoying. Overall for the price I thought it was a very nice value and convenient location. The quality of the breakfast was average to just above average but it was plentiful with a lot of choices. I also enjoyed the workout/fitness center and the sauna and steam rooms which were adequate.

Room Tip: If you want consistent internet in your room get as close to the elevators on your floor as possible...

The hotel is attractive enough and fairly well maintained, but the staff - from the manager on down - doesn't have the slightest interest in assisting customers. I was lied to (no, you get no platinum Starwood benefits here), and treated to the attention of a desk clerk who so kindly took time away from her personal phone call on her private cell while working the front desk to just say anything to appease me so she could quickly get back to her call. I wrote the manager (who seems to try to hide his name since the prior-to-arrival notice came with a different name whom none of the staff members were familiar with), and was ignored. My shower was broken (no hot water) and the desk clerk who was more interested in her private phone calls told me I needed to turn it to hot and wait. I informed her I was familiar with the quirks of the water and using a shower. It took asking for the duty manager to get an engineer sent up to fix (yes, it required tools, time and real plumbing) to hook up the hot water.

I booked this hotel for one night (March 3) and a few days later called Panama city reservations directly to add several days.(March11-13) I was told by the reservations desk in Panama City that the price would be the same as the one for the first stay. However, when I arrived the front desk on May 5 and inquired about the subsequent reservation, The front desk couldn't find it. They had no idea who took my phone call and made my second reservation, I was then told that they had to charge a higher price than the one agreed to originally (by the clerk who answered the phone) I spoke with at least 5 different staff members (including the woman in charge of service to clients) to straightened this out. I was told that "if you book on the internet is one price, but by phone and or in person it is another." This means that If I had gone up to the room and booked on my laptop I would have been given the price agreed to by phone~~
What bothered me about the experience was the lack of interest the staff showed in 1) taking responsibility and 2) attempting to find a compromise with me. FINALLY, one of the staff members Ms. K. Cerrut, was willing to take care of the problem. Another issue was that when friends called the hotel looking for me, they were told I was not registered there even thought I was sitting in my room upstairs. Retrieving phone messages left in the room also became a problem. I don't think that any hotel in Panama City which has an abundance of hotels, should make it so hard on a visitor to stay there. Four Points Sheraton was OK and has a good location but the hassle about the reservation was annoying and unnerving and took away from my enjoyment of my trip

Room Tip: My second room was on the 8th floor and very quiet. Traffic in Panama City is a nightmare (think of...

Everything about the hotel was fine, but not much more than fine. The rooms were pretty simple, and the location is decent, but the hotel in general is not much to get excited about. The staff was friendly, and the valet parking service was helpful. All in all, it was a reasonable place to stay for a one day layover in Panama City, but nothing to rave about.
