This was a highlight of Casco Viejo for us - the immensity of the altar is pretty breathtaking and the rest of the church is beautiful as well. It's easy to find and wander through. Don't miss it if you visit CV!

“Gotta check this off.”
Reviewed May 1, 2013

I mean...you can't NOT go see the famous golden altar if you're in the area. It is not the most beautiful altar I've ever seen but it is big...I mean big...fills the whole end of the church big. Given the history, I expected it to be something a couple of priests could schlep. That said, the hours seem weird and limited. We finally found it opened on the third visit. Also, it is really hot in there.

“Prefer building”
Reviewed April 14, 2013

Most people come to see the altar made of gold which is ok, but the building is more impressive to me. But it's definitely worth checking out.

“San Jose Church Panama”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

A baroque structure worthy of a visit. There were not as many statues or other icons or art as one would think but the building structure is something to behold. The apses were only for candles and not for small services but attractive. It is not The Vatican and only requires about one half hour to tour.

“Excellent gold altar”
Reviewed April 8, 2013

The gold altar was gorgeous. I found it was not lit except during masses. So see if you can go during one of the services.
