“Trans isthmus ride.”
Reviewed May 13, 2012

It's a very smooth, comfortable ride across the isthmus, with lots of nice scenery to see. The rail cars are older, but refurbished, and quite comfortable. Refreshments are available and inexpensive.

“Lovely train ride”
Reviewed April 23, 2012

The train is beautifully restored, with dark wood panelling and a wonderful dome car. Wish the ride was longer than just an hour--the scenery is lovely. We arranged to have a cab meet us at the Colon train station so we could tour the areas of San Lorenzo and Portobello.

“fun little excursion”
Reviewed April 22, 2012

after a day on gatun lake and other bird watching in the area, we connected with the railroad and took it back to the area our group was staying. it was a lovely ride through the countryside and a smooth ride to boot. and they handed out little snack packages with a commemorative box to hold them in at the end of the ride! Very unexpected. The railroad station was a great building. it had a small gift shop, but more importantly for me, it had a series of canvas tapestries with old pictures from the beginning of the railroad and the canal silkscreened onto these tapestries. it was a fine way to present the history of these two man-made features of a great country, Panama

“Panama Canal Railway”
Reviewed April 19, 2012

We took the Panama City Railroad from Panama City to Colon, there are only two trains per day Monday-Friday, one at 7:15am from Panama City to Colon and the return at 5:15pm from Colon back to Panama City. The ride takes about an hour, the one way ticket was $25. Get there early for a good seat, there's one domed observation car which filled up pretty quickly. The cars are quite nice, wood paneled, carpeted, with a bar and snack service. There's also an outdoor observation platform.

The train runs along the Panama Canal passing through rainforest, alongside the Panama Canal’s locks, through the Gaillard Cut and over Lake Gatun. If you keep your eyes open, you might spot some wildlife, we saw several crocodiles and a monkey.

Once you arrive in Colon, if you haven't already arranged for a guide, there should be some taxi drivers waiting at the platform. One couple we talked to on the train hired one of these guides and were getting a tour of Portobelo at the same time we were there.

“If you can spare the time...”
Reviewed April 19, 2012

it's worth the ride just for the historical aspect of it. Kind of pricey for what it is, but it's the experience that will give a different perspective of the canal.
