Owner description: This 265-hectare national treasure is located within Panama City’s Ancon district, and is the only protected area in Central America located within city boundaries. Standing along the Panama Canal’s eastern shore, it’s home to dozens of species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and trees. With lookout points, four well-marked trails, a scenic road and a Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute canopy crane structure, guests can explore on their own. The Park also offers guided tours to groups for a fee (five-person minimum) if booked well in advance.

A bit north of Panama City you'll find the Metropolitan National Park. At the entrance you should pay a small fee. There is a map on which you can choose your hike. We did a three hour hike through the park. It's a nice hike, we passed a small pool with turtles, saw some monkeys climbing over our heads in the trees and some more animals. Halfway is a viewpoint with a great view over the city. The park is not very spectacular but it's worth spending an afternoon if you have some spare time.

We only had time to walk the lower trails and that took about an hour. It was interesting, but without a guide I think you miss a lot. There are just a couple of signs identifying names of trees and really not much else. Resting places were along the way.

The views at the top of the Park are fantastic. Along the way, you see some animals, though not many, really. We did get to see the Motmot bird, Agouti (a rat like animal, but very different) and another hiker reported a sloth, but we didn't see that. Still the jungle vines, the hike, and the day was very nice. When we hiked down the hill, we were driven back to our hotel by a park service employee! That's service and kindness and that's the nature of Panama.

We saw a lot of birds, an anteater, a small crocodile (?) in a pond, and leafcutter ants. It was a nice hike, not too strenuous but I would probably wear close-toed shoes because of rocks. We bought one of the small maps for sale in the gift shop, but we didn't need it--there are signs along the way.

I arrived quite early when it opened, It is a wonderful park with nice trails. Saw many birds, a few animals, and a couple monkeys, I walked alone and had no problems. There are trails that are farther from the road so that there is no traffic sounds. It is easy to get to, right in Panama City
