BUILDINGS, STREETS, AND ADDRESSES IN PANAMA CITY are hard to find even for cabbies...much has to do with names which have a history. Asking for the SHERATON takes you to the busy downtown Sheraton Four Points which is ok, but just ok. The one reviewed here for years was known as SHERATON CAESARS PARK or the CAESARS PARK SHERATON. when in doubt you can use the name SHERATON ATLAPA OR ATLAPA SHERATON because it is across the street and the only hotel at the huge ATLAPA convention and exhibition center for the City...if more clarification....the SHERATON CAESAR PARK is locarted on VIA ISRAEL sometimes called Avenida Israel.....The comments about Las Hadas are true...good salads and reasonable prices...sandwiches, coffee. cakes 24 hours a day...lower prices and a more local landmark is one of the many NIKKOs cafes about 2 miles further down Via Israel towards downtown, across from the rear of the upscale MultiPlaza Mall.....This Sheraton is one of the solid better than average facilities in the city...entertainment in the casino and even in the lobby is sometimes terrific for local jazz, salsa, reggaeton and other groups.

This is a large conference center. The hotel has nice interiors and a casino, however, its in an area where you can't really do much without a taxi. I did enjoy my stay here and would recommend this hotel to anyway, but I have deducted 1 rating for the location.

Pros
The staff was very helpful and professional, seems to be a popular destination on Friday/Saturday night (the hotel bar), rooms are clean, beds are Super comfortable, and have nice views. Also, they will give you cell phone to use for FREE (you just pay for outgoing calls -- local calls only cost around $0.50 per minute). I've never seen a hotel give you a cell phone to borrow.

Also big pro was the breakfast in the club lounge which was very good. They had a nice selection of fancy tea's, 5-6 hot foods, and an omelet/waffle station with extra toppings that you can add yourself.

Cons
The location - its not terrible and doesnt seem dangerous but you're not really going to be walking anywhere.

Taxi's** - The hotel will suggest you don't walk anywhere and you take a hotel taxi instead. The hotel taxi is roughly twice the price of what a street taxi would cost. The hotel also suggests you don't take street taxi's. To give you an idea, the hotel taxi charged $10 for one way to Calle Uruguay (restaurants and nightlife). We went a 2nd night to the same place and a street taxi took us for $5. From Casco Viejo, a taxi asked for $15 to take us to Miraflores locks. I offered $10, and he agreed to $12. We paid him another $15 to sit and wait for an hour and take us back to the Sheraton. I took several taxis and didnt have any problem.

The price is good, the breakfast better... but the rooms are really old, the TV did not work well and the carpet was very very old and dirty.... You do not want to sleep in those conditions... I had mixed feelings with the personnel, at the reception they were very kind and cordial, but then when requesting a Taxi or asking for directions to the security man at the door, they were rude or did not care about the guest... A sample comment: Sr do you know how can I get a Cab? The answer: if you go to the door and there are no Cabs meqns there are no cabs!

Hotel: We found all the staff to be exceptional and helpful. We always made sure to have smaller bills for tips which is greatly appreciated. The pool is large and has lots of lounging chairs. The rooms are a bit more dated compared to other Sheratons but we were very happy with them and weren't spending too much time in the rooms anyways. We didn't hear any noises at night and we knew that there were people staying on both sides of us.

Location: Central location which is good to see the major sites, but in terms of walking distance, the hotel does not have too much around it.

Food: We were happy with the food at the restaurant. There is a good spot in the hotel for coffee and a quick breakfast of pastries/ muffins, etc. Otherwise, there is not much within walking distance around the hotel which is disappointing.

Taxis around Panama from the Hotel: I recommend not arranging a taxi through the hotel as the quoted prices are 2x or 3x the price that I ultimately ended up finding on the street. Instead, walk a block or two from the hotel and flagging down a taxi. When we were in Panama (and I think for the next two years) as the Metro is being built many taxis are unwilling to do the drive and will charge much higher prices. For example, from Casco Viejo to the hotel is approx. 10 minutes with minimal traffic, but one day it took over an hour during rush hour. Just a few quick notes on the prices we paid when flagging down a taxi as a reference point from the hotel:

- Hotel to Casco Viejo/ Mercado de Mariscos $4 (lowest paid) - $10. We couldn't find anything less than $30 to come back during "rush hour" from Casco (around 5.00pm). We just hung out until traffic died down.
- Hotel to Albrook Airport/ Albrook Mall - $15 (about 15 minutes away minimal traffic)
- Hotel to Canal - $20 (about 20 minutes way minimal traffic)
- Hotel to Amador Causeway $15 (about 10-15 minutes away minimal traffic)
- Airport to Hotel: $28

We didn't really quibble with the taxis drivers and paid the price if we found it reasonable. We found that most, if not all, of the drivers we used quoted us a reasonable price right off the bat. We also found a taxi we liked and used the concierge to call him a couple of times to drive us around.

Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel, especially at the price point when using Starwood points. My only knock is not being able to get reasonable prices for taxis from the concierge desk.

Please be warned this hotel is a big disappointment. Though senior management is trying, he alone cannot execute simple tasks nor can the employees. Stayed 5 days, First they missed my pre-arranged airport pick up. Secondly could not get a dinner reservation correct and almost ruined an evening for myself and a guest. Set up a Panama Canal tour which had a miscommunication between the hotel and the provider. The above issues all center around a VERY poorly run concierge desk. Very poor. The location is in an area with a lot of construction around. Cannot blame the hotel for that but what it does mean is that taxi's in the street will turn you down when you say "Sheraton". Too much traffic. This makes you rely on the hotel for all your transportation needs. They charge 4 to 5 times regular taxi's. Or more. No area around the hotel for walking to speak of so you need transportation. This can add $30 to $50 per day easily for rides that local taxi's would charge $10 (taxi's are very cheap in PC). The hotel car charges are obscene by comparison. I could go on but this hotel does not satisfy. To be fair there are pluses. Rooms are fine, wi-fi ok. Very nice fitness center. Club lounge is good for breakfast but the offering for the rest of the day is limited and well just cheap. Beware your stay will not be smooth.

Everyone at this hotel was so incredibly kind and accommodating! At every turn they were concerned with our comfort and well-being. However, they went above and beyond when we left our iphone on the airport shuttle. We called the hotel and they tracked down the shuttle driver. He found the phone and drove back to the airport to return it to us. Unfortunately, airport security would not let us back out of the airport - but the driver parked, came in and met with security so they could hand it through to me. We will always remember that Sheraton, and especially that shuttle driver, for their tremendous help!
