great birding & great accomodations

Review of Canopy Tower
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jul 21, 2011
Canopy Tower is simply an outstanding base for birding and other neotropical nature travel. The guides are incredibly knowledgeable and the access to mature rainforest and various wetland areas so close to the lodge makes the birding very productive. On top of that, the food was consistently very good, all the arrangements were handled perfectly and the relaxed, friendly atmosphere made the whole experience very memorable.

We had a wonderful time at Canopy Tower. The food was fantastic--fresh, veggie-rich, and plentiful. The early morning coffee and happy hours overlooking the rainforest canopy, the canal, and the sunsets were stunning. The staff were tremendously friendly and, though we weren't birders when we arrived, we learned so much from the knowledgeable guides (Thanks Carlos!) that we saw things we would have never known to look for. Our favorite part was the observation area--filled with hammocks, books, and windows where the iguana, howler monkeys, tamarins, and birds of all sort came right up to say hello. The simple rooms are clean and comfortable. In many ways, we felt that we were staying with great friends. This was the perfect place for quiet relaxation, incredible wildlife diversity, and extremely welcoming service.

We stayed at the Panama Canopy Tower from 6/26/11 to 7/3/11, booking their “Birds and History Package.” This was Panama’s green season. We experienced some rain, in the afternoons, but it really didn’t hamper our outings. The birding was excellent – saw 131 different species, the majority being lifers. Also saw monkeys, reptiles, butterflies and cool bugs. The bird guides (Alex, Domi and Carlos) were excellent, with Carlos being exceptionally good at taking digiscoped photos with our little point & shoot camera! The food and service were also exceptional – we did not go hungry. The Tower itself is an interesting venue and offers great onsite birding and mammal viewing. It’s the only place we’ve ever stayed where I could watch birds while showering!

Room tip: Any room in the Panama Canopy Tower should be great

We stayed a week at the Canopy Tower and a week at the Canopy Lodge. We had such a wonderful experience. My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stays at both lodges. The rooms were clean and comfortable and the food was both delicious and plentiful. Providing wine with dinner is a really nice touch and adds to the enjoyment of an already great meal! The staffs at both lodges were so pleasant and friendly - it was a delight to greet them each morning.
Of course, what we really went for was the birding! I enjoyed every single minute of every single trip! I will never forget how friendly and fun to be with both Alex and Danilo were. I looked forward to joining each of them for the day's adventure. I was constantly amazed at how much they knew about each bird and how patient they were while making sure we each had good looks at them.
I certainly hope that we will be fortunate enough to join each of them again sometime in the near future and to enjoy the wonderful hospitality of the Canopy Tower and Canopy Lodge once again.

We loved every minute of our stay here. We spent four days at the Canopy Tower and four days at the Canopy Lodge. We also enjoyed the zip line at the Canopy Adventures. The food was fabulous. They were very accomodating with my vegetarian diet. The staff was so friendly and helpful! Smiles abounded! The nature guides were skillful, knowledgeable, and fun to be with. And the accomodations? Magic. We loved the harpey eagle room at the Tower and room tres at the Lodge was glorious. Don't worry about the rain, just come prepared. I liked my gortex overboots a lot. A rain jacket and an umbrella helped. At the Tower, use the sulpher powder. Chiggers can get into the darndest places.

Room tip: We liked the suite at the Tower.

This former US Army air control tower has been turned into a very charming birdwatchers' hotel. We spent several days there and we were rewarded by howler monkeys right outside our bedroom window, a chestnut-billed toucan, at least 6 different species of hummingbird, and way too many other colorfull birds to mention here. The service is perfect, as are the guide's expertise and the joint meals. In the immediate vicinity there are numerous trails and, if you have a (4-wheel) vehicle the famous Pipeline road (over 300 species of birds have been reported here!) is within easy reach.
Airco is not available but, due to the light elevation - the hotel is situated upon a hill - this is not a problem. Humidity is, though, so take appropriate clothing. The hotel is linked to the Canopy Lodge in El Valle. Equally fantastic! You certainly don't have to be a birding expert to appreciate the abundant wildlife; The guides taking you on tours are very capable of showing you the most fantastic birds. Do take a good quality camera with telelens!

Room tip: Book the BlueCotinga room - it's the very best
