The Canopy Tower offers terrific views from the top floor. Bird guides, who have much knowledge, are up at 6:30-7:00 am with telescopes and information. The rooms are somewhat spartan but o.k. Most with a shared bath. Our room had a private bath but was under the stairway leading to the upper deck and consequently noisy early. Also we good hear alot of noise from the kitchen below us.

Room Tip: Get the room the the balcony. There is only one .

Six of us spent seven nights at Canopy Tower at the end of March. Our trip was organised by Jo Thomas of Wild About Travel who also travelled with us. From the moment we arrived nothing was too much trouble, the rooms were better than I had anticipated and depending on your neighbours not as noisy as I had imagined.

Our days were well planned and the great thing was that we didn't have to travel too far to get to various locations, most were within a 15-20minute drive, this meant optimum time in the field. The guides were all excellent, their ability to find the birds was fantastic and we were very lucky with mammal encounters.

Time spent at the Tower was great for spotting wildlife, a sloth was spotted on 2 occasions from the dining level, also an iguana and of course an abundance of birds, including the obligatory toucans. We were also lucky enough to see some spectacular migrations from the top of the Tower. Hummingbirds visit the feeders at the base of the Tower, a sheet for moths was put out at night so there was always something to look at.

The food was varied, wine was included with our evening meal and there was never a
shortage! We paid an inclusive rate, so apart from our beer we had nothing else to pay for.

If you are totally into wildlife you really must visit Canopy Tower!

The Canopy Tower is an eco-lodge located in the Soberania National Park area near the Panama Canal. We went to see the wildlife and were extremely pleased. The guides are extremely knowledgeable and can help you locate all manner of birds, mammals, reptiles, insects, and plants. The Tower's location in the rain forest brings the wildlife right to your window (some birds even zipped through the dining room). The food was great and the other guests were quite interesting. There is no TV or air conditioning. It cools down nicely at night, and you can go to sleep to the sounds of the rainforest.

Room Tip: The rooms are all pretty basic.

I stayed here for one night during my recent trip to Canopy Lodge (excellent) to reduce travel time to the airport for an early morning flight. This was the Lodge representative's suggestion and a very good one. For a full review of the Tower or the Lodge, please see my other reviews.

This review is essentially to report the mammal sightings in my afternoon and evening there. At the end of a slow afternoon birding tour, Domi, my guide, and I were walking back to the truck when we heard rustling in the grass at our feet! This turned out to be a Northern Tamandua, an anteater! He was unafraid of us, and we watched him for several minutes before he casually climbed a tree and left us. This sighting alone would have made my trip, but we went out for a night drive later and sighted two sloths, an olingo, and a kinkajou! Other than the sloths, which you can normally see well, these are very hard-to-see and beautiful animals. It was the perfect ending to a great trip. Please note that these sightings were very lucky, but they illustrate just how wonderful and exciting the rainforest can be if you give it a chance.

The guides and food were excellent however at $490 per night for 2 people I expected a higher standard of accommodation. Single beds with chenille bedspreads, threadbare towels and faded posters and banners that look like they haven't been replaced since the Tower was opened more than 10 years ago. For my money I'd rather stay in a comfortable city hotel and pay only for the excellent morning and afternoon guided trips.

I’m glad you found our guides and food “excellent”. Thank you very much.

We would like to point out that included in the $490 payment (for two people) are 3 "excellent" meals with wine at dinner and a cocktail hour (a $200 value), as well as one guided tour the first day which is priced at $190 (for two people). Thus, the first night our clients end up paying $100 for a double room ($50 per person!), very reasonable considering the Canopy Tower's extraordinary location within a national park and surrounded by pristine forest and abundant wildlife.

By the way, the Canopy Tower is not, nor do we claim to be, a luxury hotel with king size beds, combed cotton sheets, CNN, bath robes, etc. We are a unique eco lodge offering an intimate encounter with nature with birds and monkeys outside your window, excellent guides and excellent food.

You will NEVER forget your stay here! Not elegant, lots of steps, quite noisy (it IS an all steel structure after all), but the site is fantastic as is the food, staff, and birding. Excellent guides take you all over the place in a.c. equipped vans or (preferably) open trucks with benches. You will see birds you never imagined possible. And the view and birding is memorable from the top of the tower. The same gentleman with the foresight to convert this old air-force radar facility to a very useable birding eco center (and famous!) also developed the Canopy Lodge in Le Valle de Anton, a very different experience. It's also a birders fantasy land. Many do both on a single trip. You WILL enjoy............

What a great place for those looking for something more adventurous in a vacation trip. My family and I (two adults and three teenagers) recently spent about a week at both the Tower and their sister site, Canopy Lodge. The tower (and the Lodge) was an ideal location for birding and other wildlife viewing. All guided trips were within a short driving or walking distance. We did a number of morning and afternoon tours with lunch back at the Tower. Great birding and wildlife sightings. And we can’t say enough about our guide Carlos Bethancourt. The rest of the staff were friendly and helpful and the food was fine.

The Canopy Tower is not a five-star resort, so manage expectations. But it does provide clean, comfortable rooms, linens, beds and bathrooms, for those who have rooms with a private bathroom. No air-conditioning but the fans were more than adequate, at least during our visit. The commons area on the top floor was fun, complete with a large seating area, library, computer and dining room. But the best was the observation deck above – at canopy level. Many good birds and night mammals - for us a Wooly Opossum eating tree blossoms -and great scenic views. Our sunset pictures from the deck were special.

There is a floor with single rooms and two shared bathrooms but I did not stay in those. I did look in on one of the single rooms (as our teenagers stayed in those) and, again, it looked clean and comfortable with a bed, side table and small closet area with lots of windows. The kids thought it was great, of course.

Meals were all buffet with a limited choice for each meal but more than enough provided for all guests. Again, the cooking staff (and our guide, Carlos) was terrific in helping us manage our special dietary needs as one my sons has a severe nut allergy. I’m glad to say we never had to use an epi-pen or make a special trip to the hospital.

Our stay was definitely one of the most unique trips we have taken, starting with the lodging itself – the old metal tower. We thought it was great. The other extraordinary aspect was our guide, Carlos. Not only did he know every single bird call and sound made, he could whistle it himself. His spotting ability and effort to make sure all in the tour saw any given bird was exemplary. The extra touch was how personable he was. A native of Panama, Carlos was educated in the States and is just full of great stories from his life experiences. He was a joy to sit with at our meals and tour around the area. We feel we have made a new life-long friend. It helped differentiate this trip from all others we have taken.

Highly recommended.
