Another great reminder of what man can do when they put their mind to something. Not only thinking of cutting a shortcut to connect two oceans, but to figure out how to do this over a mountain range...incredible! There is a great viewing area (4th floor I believe) to see how a lock works, but grab a good spot for your pics as it fills up fast. The left side of the platform is best.
It would be pretty boring if a big ship wasn't passing when you are there. Apparently there is an app that shows when ships are coming. I was on a day tour with Barefoot Panama Tours and I believe they figured out when the big ship was coming (or got lucky)!
There is a movie every hour, but prioritize the ship crossing as it takes a long time for one to go through so you won't have multiple opportunities. Also, the movie is a big disappointment, providing almost no canal facts. Make sure to grab the free pamphlet from the kiosk that explains how to canal works and the history.
There is a little outdoor cafe downstairs to grab a coffee or empanada while waiting for the movie or a ship.More
