If you visit Panama, you have to go to the Panama Canal. They have a great museum exhibit, 3D movie, and the view of the canal from the 4th floor is amazing! Two ships were passing through the canal during our visit. It was incredible to find out that one ship paid $150,000 in cash to go through. The other ship had to pay $400,000 in cash because it was larger. Soo much $$ goes through the canal so I hope it's helping the country. I've never been in one spot where I could see both the Atlantic and Pacific oceans at one time. Absolutely amazing!

At Gatun Locks Vistor Center you can almost reach out and touch the ships going through the locks. If the announcer, Edwin Miranda, is working, he is a wealth of information not only about the ships going through at the time of your visit, but also Panama in general. Got questions, ask. There are vending machines for drinks and snacks. We were not aware that the new Visitor's Center for the expansion of the canal is open. We were going to go to the nearby marina for lunch, but he gave us directions to the new center and WOW were we surprised! Very nice restaurant and bar overlooking the expansion work. WOW is all I can say. Amazing. There is a short video in English that explains the process. Entrance for foreign visitors is $15. Since we live in Panama and get old folks discount, our fee $3. Gatun locks for residents is free. I think visitors is $5 We drove up to Gatun on the new highway. About an hour from Panama City. There are tour companies that offer the trip. Skip Miraflores. Also if you have to choose between a 1/2 day tour through the locks or going to Gatun, I would choose Gatun. Other than a boat ride on the canal and going up and down in Miraflores and Pedro Miguel locks it is boring. There is another tour with Capt. Carl on the canal (doesn't go through the locks) with his Jungleland Explorer trip. Great full day to his houseboat on an inlet of the canal. A must do in Panama. Feed the monkeys, check out wild life, get up close to the big ships transiting the canal. Check it out.

Not to be missed. Was on our bucket list for a long time. Definitely is one of those things that can only be experienced, as you enter the lock and the gates close. It is amazing that the boat rises to the top in only 8 minutes. Recommend the partial transit (5 hours) over the full transit (10 hours.)

Very interesting to see exactly how the canal works. How ships enter and how they are maneuvered through the locks. It is truly amazing engineering.

Miraflores Lock, though jammed with tourists, is so fascinating and the museum/displays are excellent. If staying in Panama City check Rick at Pequeno ParaisonBed and Breakfast (it's on Trip Advisor) - he does amazing tours.
