if you go do hire a good guide w knowledge from country history and canal details. We had one and it was not so fortunate. Next day we had an amazing class about it from other guide.
watch the 3d movie BEFORE walking around.
restaurant sucks, so plan going in the morning and then having lunch in panama city or at the walk strip.

The museum was phenomenal. The representation of those various cultures that helped build the canal was my favorite because they were not always recognized. I was so impressed. They even have an area where you can either list or search for your loved one who worked for the Panama Canal.

I know it sounds a bit nerdy, but the complexity and beauty of the canal is amazing. And even if you're not into that kind of stuff, the size of the ships passing through is just breath-taking.

A suggestion: if you can, go to the Gatun Locks visitor's center. It is much closer to the actual locks and far less crowded. The Pacific side locks have a wonderful visitor's center (which includes a museum of sorts), snack bars, restaurant (which is very nice), and a cheesey movie, but it is very, very crowded with visitors.

Read The Path between the Seas before your trip. the north to south trip is more interesting than the reverse.

Was able to watch ships pass through the locks up close. A canal employee gave short talk from the viewing platform and handed out a pamphlet.
