Owner description: Called the “French Plaza” in English, this pleasant spot offers great views and a leisurely spot in which to purchase and savor raspados (fruity snow cones) on hot, humid days. Housed in this plaza is the elegant Instituto Nacional de Cultura (National Institute of Culture), which was among the sites used for “Quantum of Solace,” a 2008 James Bond film that supposedly took place in Bolivia and Haiti but was filmed in Panama. Formerly the Supreme Court building, the Instituto now houses a small theater and hosts cultural events.

“A monument dedicated to the failure of the French to finish the canal”
Reviewed August 24, 2014 via mobile

Kinda funny if you think about it. It is right below a wonderful promenade where you can see the skyline of the new city and also much of the old city.

“The nicest views in town”
Reviewed August 5, 2014

If you visit Casco Antiguo, this is a must. It is located at the end of the point of the Casco. It was built in honor of the Frenchmen who began the construction of the Panama Canal. It needs upkeep as the plaques explaining the history are run down but the place is espectacular with views of the Bridge of the Americas, the entrance of the Canal, the new Gehry museum and the Bay of Panama. The freeway that goes around the point takes away some of the magic the historic place has but if you feel up to it, you may walk around what is called the Cinta Costera 3 to get a different perspective of the Casco Antiguo. Take water and travel light since this is a walkway next to a freeway so there are no stands selling water or soft drinks and the full walk may take up to one hour. Plaza de Francia has several coffee shops and full restaurants to visit. I would recommend going by sunset when it is a little cooler and you may end up having an early dinner in one of the restaurants.

“Great visit in the Old City!”
Reviewed May 31, 2014 via mobile

Located on the outskirts of the old city. A nice place to visit and see the statues of people responsible for the Panama Canal. Make sure to read the plaques. Nice view of the ocean from there.

“Nice view”
Reviewed April 21, 2014

Nice walk and view with lots of local handicrafts for sale. Could use someone selling water or drinks as it is hot, even with the nice breeze off the water.

“Tribute to the French”
Reviewed April 10, 2014

Plaza is at the end of Casco Viejo, the old city of Panama founded by the French at the time they were attempting to build the canal. Great views from the top of the plaza and monument.
