Owner description: Called the “French Plaza” in English, this pleasant spot offers great views and a leisurely spot in which to purchase and savor raspados (fruity snow cones) on hot, humid days. Housed in this plaza is the elegant Instituto Nacional de Cultura (National Institute of Culture), which was among the sites used for “Quantum of Solace,” a 2008 James Bond film that supposedly took place in Bolivia and Haiti but was filmed in Panama. Formerly the Supreme Court building, the Instituto now houses a small theater and hosts cultural events.

Most places at "Casco Antiguo" is been restored, so is extremely dificult to fins a place to park. Better go on foot and wander for a long time.

“Great to walk around or just sit awhile”
Reviewed January 17, 2013

This is the plaza where the French have their embassy and also an obelisk in memory of the all the French who perished in their first attempt to build the Panama canal. It is small but the buildings around are interesting - including the current French embassy. The old dungeons are here and from one side you can walk up the Paseo Bovedas - the passage built on top of the old seawall. There are nice views seaward and towards the Bridge of the Americas.

“Nice stroll”
Reviewed September 20, 2012

The "Casco Viejo" is currently under much needed repair, but there are many restaurants and shops that make the trip worthwhile. La Plaza de Francia is a historical site that retains much of its charm. Don't miss the National Cathedral Plaza. Great photo opportunities throughout the area.

“A fascinating place to take a leasurely stroll”
Reviewed August 26, 2012

Take the time to walk around the Plaza de Francia. The cultural center and historic artwork on the walls there together with the written history is interesting. Usually some Kuna villagers selling their handicrafts as well.

“Beautiful and quiet”
Reviewed August 9, 2012

This is a quiet corner of the Old City in front of the French Embassy, sporting a monument to Ferdinand De Lessups, an unsung hero of the Panama Canal story. Nothing much to see here, but it's a nice use of urban plaza space.
