I'll admit, I didn't have a lot of expectations about the ruins at Panama La Vieja. I thought it would be a pile of rubble. But the ruins were far more extensive and preserved than I expected! I could almost imagine the night that the pirates sacked the city and burned it all down. It was like stepping into another century.

The ruins are well preserved and you can climb the stairs to the top, where the view is impressive. A quick trip to the Panama La Vieja ruins is a nice visit to young and old.

Panamá La Vieja is under renovaciones. You are not able to walk freely at this time. There is a fee to get into Panama La Vieja but it also covers the entrance into a museum that is a short drive down the road. There is nothing there but the ruins. There is no guided tour and no guides. This is very disappointing for a history buff.

Try the tapa's in this area; wonderful, great setting. can be expensive but worth a night out paying that little extra.

I had heard about the ruins of the old Spanish settlement that grew into Panama City (turns out Captain Morgan ransacked it a few centuries ago and it was never rebuilt on site). It's interesting for historical reasons, but it's really just a bunch of ruins, and there's really not much else going on around there at all. Make a trip of it if you like ruins and feel like walking around a wide-open space in the city (hard to come by, despite a few parks dotting the landscape). Otherwise, you'll probably get more out of a visit to Casco Viejo.
