I think we picked the best time to visit Panama as there was no traffic and the city almost deserted. Our hotel, Waldorf Astoria, was gorgeous since it only opened 2 weeks ago.The location is excellent. We had an ocean view room altho it's not on Ave Balboa because it was facing a gap between 2 tall bldgs. The staff -all are friendly and helpful. The lady in the pool area provides you with an iced water w/ lemon without being asked. The concierge- Luis is very helpful. The hotel is walking distance from the shopping center,Multicenter but a $4 taxi ride will take you to a better mall, the Multiplaza( has a nice supermarket) at the lowest level. Our room had the luxurious amenities of a 5-star hotel.A nice reasonable restaurant,Don Blas, about 2 blocks north, offered good breakfast/lunch( 8 slices of thick greaseless bacon) for a very reasonable price. The Hopon/Hop off tour bus for $29(valid for 24 hrs) is history a good way to see the city. Pick up the Panama Canal tour bus ( at the Multicenter if your hotel is in the area) for the canal which charges an entrance $8/person.The bus goes to the top so no need to get off on the parking lot level.Go to the top floor to view the ships crossing the canal.Great history especially the involvement of US there. Pick up the bus and go to the Old town and then pick up the City tour bus if you wish to go to the Isla Flamenco-a nice place to have lunch on the bay.Best to pick up this tour bus at noon and it doesnt expire until noon the next day.A private tour arranged by the hotel will cost you $90/person plus tax for everything that the previous tours offer except the for the visit to Casa Viejo- ruins.Panama is a nice combination of old and new city but the piles of uncollected garbage on the streets somewhat spoils the beauty of this gem in Central America.
