Spanish classes really immersed you in the language! My teacher very rarely switched to English, which really helped solidify my knowledge. Every day the school has some sort of fun activity after the classes (dance lessons, happy hour, bike rides etc.). By the end of the week, you really feel like a community. The school is located right in the heart of the historic district, with tons of food and drink options nearby. I miss this place!

As soon as you stepped in the door the staff were incredibly welcoming, friendly and went above and beyond to help us with anything we needed all week. A test was set to initially gauge our level of fluency in order to determine which class was appropriate for us.

We chose the one week intensive option and it was incredibly enjoyable. Classes were punctual, small and had an excellent, collegial atmosphere. We had an awful lot of laughter in our group of three and the school promoted a lot of social activities outside of class: drinks, market visits, salsa dancing and historical excursions to local sights and the seven churches.

Whilst we definitely feel that we learned an awful lot in 20 hours and prices were very cost effective, we did feel that there could have been a closer focus on the teaching methods used.

Though not a criticism, there were a couple of things worth mentioning. Our teacher sometimes lacked the clarity in her explanations of certain things and occasionally confused terms like adjectives and pronouns. As a bilingual Panamanian, her understanding of English was very good, but she did often misunderstand the nature of our questions and not give an adequate answer as a result of it, sometimes unable to communicate a clear grammatical explanation in English. We had to look a few things up independently for clarification. Occasionally, we were tested on irregular words/verb forms that hadn't been covered in class and then reminded of how important it was to know them when we didn't get it correct. This was a bit frustrating. We did ask a few times for certain things to be covered in subsequent sessions which weren't and this was a bit frustrating as after a week we would have loved to be able to have simple transactional-level conversations about travel, directions, ordering food etc that we could take away, as opposed to simply being able to discuss families and ourselves. A greater appreciation of what students need if only signed up for the one week is essential as it will be very different for those signed up for a month.

Was the learning poor? No, it was all relevant and useful, and the teaching was definitely good. It could have been a little more thorough though. We did also get the impression that there was a variety of thoroughness and experience between the different teachers, some of whom we came in to contact with had a greater capacity to explain and extend answers more clearly. We would suggest that a wider level of more practical topics and useful verbs could have been taught if the length of some activities had been reduced a little - some did feel a bit like fillers at times, and our daily 'walk and talk' outside did potentially go on for ten minutes more than it needed to at times.

With that said, we did get a good standard of Spanish taught by the end of the week, we did get to practise and extend our vocabularies in practical situations - even if not as many useful subjects were covered as we would have hoped - and we did have a really, really enjoyable time.

Would we sign up again? Yes.

Would we sign up for an additional week? Yes, absolutely, but we would expect that the level of learning was pitched at a slightly higher level and more extension work set, and we would also like to see the lessons being delivered with a slightly faster pace, as well as responding a bit more to the emerging needs of us as students, but overall we were very happy.

Thank you very much, Casco Antiguo School: a very professional outift.

Thanks so much for the feedback, we appreciate you taking the time to write to and let us know how we can improve. As a school we thrive on feedback, it helps up know what’s working and where we can do better. As teachers and staff we regularly ask students how their classes are going, both formally and informally, and believe there is always room to grow.

We’re so sorry you felt your teacher could have been clearer in her explanations. We use the communicative method at Casco Antiguo Spanish School which means all of our classes are taught in Spanish. Though most of our teachers do speak English we find in the long run it’s better for the student to learn Spanish in Spanish. All of our teachers have degrees in Education and/or Spanish and have years of teaching experience prior to undergoing training and supervision here the school. That said, there is always room to improve. We have addressed your observations specifically with the teacher as well as to the rest of the staff to make sure this doesn’t happen again. We’re constantly investing in training and supervision for the teachers to ensure our students get the most out of their time here at the school and appreciate all the feedback.

Also, thanks for letting us know your preference for more time in the classroom dedicated to specific (transactional) travel-related topics. As long as we know beforehand what type of class you’d prefer we’re happy to accommodate these requests whenever possible. Had we known your preferences at the time, we would have been happy to speak with the teacher to make the necessary changes or recommended a semi private course so you could focus directly on those. Most of our students enjoy the small group dynamic and the ability to get out of the classroom to put into practice what they are learning at the school. However, these activities should always have a specific learning objective so students can measure the effectiveness of the activity and practice in real life settings.

That’s great you found all the staff so friendly and helpful, and that you would have stayed for longer if you had the time. Most students who are traveling choose to take 2-3 weeks of the Small Group Intensive course to learn as much as they can before setting off to explore the rest of Latin America. Thanks again for choosing to learn Spanish with us. We hope you can put to use what you’ve learned during your travels!

First, they are now in their brand new, sparkling, facility. Air-conditioned classes, patio and bathrooms. They always had the best instructors and staff...now the facility matches! They teaching method is close to emersion and geared for fast learning in a fun manner. You learn to speak with a sound basis of how the language goes together. Couple all this with their extra social activities, salsa, bike rides etc. and you have a combination that can not be beat. One week, one month or as much as you want...this is the place to come. Avenue A next to the Madrigall restaurant.

At the beginning of my trip of 4 weeks I joined the intense group course, 5 days a week, 4 hours a day. We had a really small group and a teacher that always spoke Spanish during classes and tried to teach us the language in a fun way. After this week I felt my Spanish was really improved and it helped my stay in Central America a lot. I enjoined the classes so much that the end of my trip I took another two private lessons. Also the school offers nice and free activities outside the classes (a sunset bike tour for example). If you are looking for a good school with nice & good teachers then this is the place to be in Panama City!
