“Great place to stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 22, 2014

We recently stayed in one of the private rooms at Magnolia Inn. The room was clean, spacious and had all amenities. The staff were awesome and so helpful. They made great recommendations for restaurants, bars and activities. Casco Viejo was a good area to stay at in the city. Lots of beautiful architecture and things to see. Definitely stay here if you are visiting Panama City!

I stayed at Magnolia Inn for a total of 5 nights during my trip in Panama. In fact, after travelling the rest of the country, I opted to stay at Magnolia Inn again for a variety of reasons. Including the incredible staff who went above and beyond to ensure that the stay was comfortable, safe and enjoyable. In particular, I never hesitated to ask a young Dutch man, Joeri, for his advice on places to eat, things to do in the city and he was always happy to provide information about safety in the city as well. I would highly recommend the clean, quiet hostel (or hotel) as a place for travellers to stay if they're looking for a great place in Casco Viejo.

Magnolia Inn was a wonderful place to stay in Casco Viejo. A few steps out the door and you are in the heart of the neighborhood with plenty to walk around and see. We had originally spent our first night in Panama City at Luna's Castle and walking into Magnolia Inn was a breathe of fresh air. For just a couple dollars more then Luna's we got AC, a comfortable mattress, clean bathrooms, great common area (with balconies overlooking the streets), and awesome hospitality.

We stayed in the dorms and it was by far one of the best experiences I've had traveling. The full size lockers (we even forgot a lock and they loaned us one for free), and the reading lamps by each bed are a nice touch. We were taking a night bus on the day we checked out, and Magnolia Inn was kind enough to let us store our bags all day, and shower there in the evening before we headed out.

We were able to walk in and get a reservation which was quite lucky, but be sure to book ahead as this place gets very full due to it's popularity and great price. I would recommend this to any travelers coming through Panama City looking to stay in Casco Viejo.

I stayed for a few days here in a dorm bed. I don't usually stay in dorm rooms, but seeing what they had offered at Magnolia Inn I saw it was worth it.

This place is a nice hotel, which also doubles as a kind of up-market hostel. The private rooms are of hotel standard and price. The dorm beds are only a couple of extra dollars on other hostels in the area but waaay nicer. Fantastic mattresses, air-conditioning, lots space etc. Bathrooms clean and great showers.

The place also has a communal area and kitchen much like a hostel and it's right in the centre of the old town where you want to be.

The American owners are really helpful and give honest advice on what to see and do and how to get places.

Unlike the other hostels in the area such as Luna's this is not a party hostel, but it's still sociable.

Overall very good operation and I highly recommend it.

In particular if you are looking for a dorm bed, look no further than Magnolia. Having stayed here and Luna's (the Casco standby - see my review) I can say without a doubt if you are looking for a safe, clean place to rest your head to have found the right place. But without a doubt, book ahead! If you are coming in high season and not 100% sure how long you might need to stay, book for longer and opt to cut your visit shorter later if need be (or perhaps be forced to stay elsewhere). The owners suggested this strategy to me, but only for the dorm beds - they will not be pleased if you pull that on a private room!

In a beautiful blue building in the heart of it all, close to Cathedral Square this place is a real gem. Towels are available to rent for a $5 deposit, linens are clean and crisp and showers and bathrooms are squeaky clean. Dorms are spacious and upper bunks have proper stairs to get up to them. If you have reached the age in life where you normally prefer to have your own room rather than share, and when getting hotel rooms (in North America) you have reached the point where you'd pay a little bit more to stay in a place where you don't mind walking barefoot on the carpet and prefer if your bed doesn't have a fire-retardant polyester bedspread (this is my new personal standard whenever financially feasible!) then surprisingly you probably won't mind being in these dorms - the disruption to your comfort vs cost savings bring out the grown-up version of the backpacker in you!

My only complaints would be the lack of onward travel information (but you can visit Luna's or the travel agency next door to Luna's for that) and the cold temperature in the dorms; although most people would find my "complaint" about that to actually be a positive thing, I just happen to despise air conditioning with almost every fibre of my being (and they did have blankets available for people like me!)

Magnolia Inn was a huge building in a great location and the place seemed to be always full. The place seemed to cater more to the youngish tourists on low budgets because there were more dorm rooms than private rooms, but there were also several air-conditioned rooms with private baths. We got one of those rooms for $88 for three people. It was a good deal.

Positive aspects:

The beds were very comfortable and room was large enough for three people with two queen- sized beds.

The hosts were very helpful and friendly and they knew a lot about the general area, good places to eat, directions to any place, and also could give their take on the Panamanian politics.

The Inn was very clean all over and our rooms were tip-top.

Negatives:

Ours was the only bathroom (# 28) on that floor that was not inside the room although the bathroom was reserved just for this room. Apparently the construction did not allow that due to some plumbing issues. It was a bit annoying to have to open the door go across the hall to the bathroom come back and make sure to lock your room all half asleep.

There was a lot of construction going on around the building and it was a bit loud and also had to keep shades down because of all the construction workers in front of your glass window.

But these were necessary evils of civilization, not the fault of the Inn owners .

If I come back to Panama city this is definitely the place I would stay, and I would make a reservation a month ahead of time!

I recommend Magnolia Inn enthusiastically and suggest planning well in advance!

Room Tip: If you get a private room make sure you do not get # 28 because your bathroom will be across the hal...

Our stay at the Magnolia Inn had all the components to make it wonderful. The owners and staff genuinely care about their guests. The experience was great from the very beginning. Reggie and Cherie promptly contacted me after I made a reservation through a third party booking agency. They offered to arrange airport pickup if that was needed. All email correspondence was promptly answered. The hotel is in an old mansion so has period charm and beautiful architecture and the location can't be beat.
Upon arrival at the Inn. We got settled in a very nice room that was as advertised. The owners were very helpful about getting us oriented to the neighborhood; the good and the bad. They patiently answered questions and made helpful suggestions.
The fun thing about the Magnolia Inn is that it is a hostel and hotel in the same building. There were all kinds of people from all over the world. There is a common kitchen area that is available to all guests and a comfortable living room like lobby.
The most amazing thing happened when we were delayed during our partial transit of the Panama Canal. We were supposed to be back before three and did not dock until 4:15. The owners helped us make arrangements to get picked up at the dock and then go straight to the airport. They sent our luggage which we had left at the Magnolia Inn with the driver who got us to the airport on time to catch our international flight. Without this extra special extra effort we would have missed our flight which no one ever wants to happen!
I would stay at this hotel again in a heartbeat!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Room Tip: There is a variety of room types to choose from.
