We stayed at Magnolia Inn for 3 days as soon as we arrived for our first trip to Panama just before Christmas. Casco Viejo was a perfect place to wander and get the feel of the history and culture of Panama. (The downtown city centre is fantastic but not pedestrian friendly and somewhat overpowering at first.)
We started each morning at he Super Gourmet Restaurant...a fabulous restaurant for breakfast just off Cathedral Square. Morning walks to explore the area followed by picnic lunches in the room (3C) enjoying great views over the city. Room was comfortable even though the shower and bathroom were a little rough around the edges. Friends stayed in room 2C and loved the room (better bathroom) even though there was no view. Wonderful location and friendly, helpful staff. It was great to be able to slip 'home' to escape the heat of midday and then venture out again in the late afternoon.
Only disappointment was that the floodlights for the Cathedral shine right in the main window at night. We had to close the curtains of one main window and couldn't enjoy the evening views. Not sure if any thing can be done about this because the lights on the Cathedral are beautiful when you are in the square.
Night life is vibrant and rooftop bars provide spectacular vistas over the downtown core.
Casco Viejo is a wonderful place...our 3 days were full and we're so glad we didn't have to settle for the typical 'flyby' 1/2 day tour of the area.

This is one of the nicer hostels I have ever stayed in. Huge old mansion perfectly located. Their staff are very friendly and super helpful and the price is very reasonable. Maria by the way is a superstar. Only downside is one staying in room one or two it is a very large room with many beds and people in and out every night. Ask for a 4 bed dorm. Overall very clean, 24/7 desk staff, great wifi connection, AC in the rooms, and an abundance of private bathrooms and shower rooms in the hallway. The price on the private rooms seems steep for this property, but I'm sure they're nice. Couldn't recommend this place enough.

We stayed at the a Magnolia for 2 nights right before Chriistmas - one private room and a 4 person bunk room that we took for our 3 young adult children (shared bath). The. Casco Viejo location was great! The hotel exceeded all expectations - it was clean, large rooms, great common space, and an attentive staff. No need to look anyplace else. Email and phone communication was a breeze. Karloz the taxi driver and tour guide met us at the airport and then 2 days later drove us to the rental car desk at Albrook Airpport and led us right to the highway. I can't say enough good things about our experience.

Room Tip: We had room 2A, which was great.

Really cute place.....tucked in a side street in casco. The owner was very nice and so was the young girl that checked me in. I am a light sleeper and it was to loud for me. You can hear the club thumping until early morning....besides that this was a gem. You can walk to everything......

Room Tip: The area is just loud! Construction during the day and music/clubs at night.....

Our family stayed here for 4 nights, 2 at the start of our trip and 2 at the end of our trip, in a private room both times. Fantastic stay, helpful folks (eg, provided helpful tips for eating, walking, day trips, etc), safe area to walk around, including the evenings. Casco Viejo is full of history, character and colonial buildings, views, little shops and great restaurants (La Ronda Pizzeria was one of our favourites, or ceviche at the Fish Market). However sitting on the porch of the Magnolia is also wonderful, either in the early morning with your coffee, or evening with a beer is nice too. Highly recommend this place! Thank you for a fabulous stay!

We had a lay over in Panama for only one night. So lucky that we booked this place. It's beautiful and lovely. We had a room at the top that sleeps three people. NOt at all like a hostel. More like a luxury inn. Location is also excellent. Tons of things within walking distance. We hired a guide named Karloz who literally spent all day and night with us. He was incredible, knowledgeable and very generous. I couldn't believe we say the Panama Canal, the new city, the old city and everything in between in such a short time. I wish every guide was a friendly and fair as Karloz. Truly a great experience. Thank you!

If you're going to Panama City, you want to stay in Casco Viejo, and at the Magnolia Inn. It was my first dorm experience and it was incredibly comfortable. The rooms, bathrooms and common areas are very clean with lots of natural light. And Joeri was a great source of information about the area and was a great help answering all of our questions, even about later legs of our trip. We ended up having a spontaneous dinner with Joeri and another guest, chatting, eating and having a great time - really having the family style experience that hostels aim to create. This is a wonderfully comfortable stay if you're looking for budget, and also has separate rooms available away from the dorms if you're looking for more privacy. This is a great place and I recommend it to anyone.
