A friend and I stayed here for three nights at the beginning and one night at the beginning of our week trip to Panama. The staff at the hostel are great and very accommodating! However, our flight got in late and even though we provided flight information for Karloz, he did not wait for us and due to construction and it being a Saturday night with people everywhere, our taxi driver got lost. It took at least a half hour of walking around the city with our taxi driver, who was amazing, to finally find the hostel. Thus, I would recommend being sure to use Karloz to get there or that your taxi driver knows for sure where he is going. The location is great for getting around to various places. A major downfall is that there is so much construction going on in Casco Viejo right now and it was very noisy throughout the day, but the hostel is definitely not at fault for that. We stayed in a private hostel room, each with our own bunks. The room was great, but ours was located right by the stairs, which meant we frequently had people standing outside our room at all hours (including pretty late at night) talking. I would avoid room 3 if possible. The bathrooms were very clean, which was awesome! At the end of our trip, Karloz took us to the airport and even though his car unexpectedly got a flat tire, he was very calm and nice, and had it changed within ten minutes and apologized profusely, even though we knew it wasn't his fault. Overall, I would recommend staying here, as it was great for the price and area.

Room Tip: If staying in one of the hostel rooms, try to avoid room three. Room five is the furthest from the...

Clean rooms, comfortable dorm beds, hot water (unless the entire city doesn't have water), fast wifi, air conditioning, spacious living room, perfect location in the middle of Casco Viejo, friendly staff fluent in English and Spanish. I've stayed at Magnolia in the dorm rooms many times since they opened in 2012. My mom also stayed in one of the private rooms and they were beautifully decorated with fans and air conditioning, and great views! Magnolia literally is my home away from home!

We stayed at the Magnolia Inn for 8 days in Penthouse 3B. It was located in the perfect area, walking distance to lots of Restaurants and attractions. Once arriving at the airport, we were welcomed by Karlos who drove us to the Inn. He is very informative and knows a lot about the city. The Staff was very helpful and friendly, in particular the woman (Sorry forgot the name) that worked at the Front Desk who always went above and beyond to help us. The Owners offered 5 Star Service. We ran into an issue with an Agent one night and at the end of our stay, the owner apologized, too ownership and made things right. The Magnolia Inn is a perfect place to stay while visiting Panama and we will definitely be back! Rodney B.

The hotel has clean, comfortable room, super friendly staff, well equipped communal kitchen and dining area and is located in in the middle of Casco Viejo. Our stay was very relaxing but also exciting and educational. Carlos, a driver/guide associated with the hotel organized various tours for us - bird watching in Parque Nacional Soberania and the Miralflores Locks.

Room Tip: Top floor rooms have a nice view and a terrace.

This hostel was a great choice and I highly recommend it! I was able to email the staff to reserve a single hostel bed instead of the private rooms available on their website. It is in a great neighborhood with a couple of tiendas right around the corner in case you want to cook. Very walkable, even with the construction since sidewalks are available. I had a hard time finding the hostel since the taxis do not go all the way down calle 8va, so be on the lookout for a light blue building on your right. The hostel rooms were really well designed with steps instead of ladders leading to the top bunks and outlets and lights in every bed. And there was air conditioning, hot water, and good wireless internet. The beds were really comfortable, but did squeak a lot. The owner was really nice and helpful. Very Peace Corps friendly since the owner's daughter was a PCV and current PCVs stay here all the time. My suggestion: take a taxi instead of using Karloz. It is SO easy to get a collectivo taxi upon arrival at the airport (about $11, but you have to wait for more passengers) and we got a taxi right away at 7am on the way back to the airport for only $25 (for 3 people, Karloz would have charged $33).

Hi PCV - We enjoy all the groups that stay with us especially our Peace Corp Volunteers. I will look into the squeaky bed. Drop me and email with the room / bed # if you get a chance.

Street taxis are cheaper but just to clarify, Karloz has big Crown Victoria, he helps you with your bags, air conditioning and he speaks English. Guest can choose which ever fits there needs,
.
Thanks for staying with us.

I feel this hostel has deteriorated recently. If you're expecting it to be anything like some of these rooms here, you are mistaken. We never would have stayed here if we knew what it was going to be like.

Although the staff is exceptional (went out of their way to provide recommendations and help us with assorted things) and the location couldn't be better (right in the center of a safe part of Casco Viejo), you will be awakened by construction every morning (except Sunday) between 5am and 6am, and you may also find it hard to go to sleep because there is a major club nearby and the walls of this place are paper-thin. We were even awakened multiple times by the doorbell ringing (necessary to enter the place).

There is NO HOT WATER, and there was often no soap in the bathrooms nor shampoo available for use.

Perhaps even worse, someone had her stuff IN OUR PRIVATE ROOM when we arrived. The owner told us he couldn't do anything about it because she was out for the day sightseeing (well, how about MOVE HER STUFF?). She didn't return until the evening, preventing us from taking a nap when we would have liked to cause we didn't know when she was going to return. And perhaps what's even worse: over our three-night stay there, the hostel NEVER CHANGED HER DIRTY BEDDING. Some private room!

I would have expected better for $70/room/night. I recommend you consider one of the other myriad of options in Casco Viejo in place of this hostel.

We are very disappointment to hear you were not happy staying in one of our hostel rooms. We are happy to hear you were very happy with our location and found our staff helpful and courteous. We take maintenance, hygiene and the quality of our hostel and our hotel rooms very serious. With that said, if we had no hot water it would have been for only an hour or so while the maintenance man changed the gas tank for the week. If there was no soap in one of the four hostel showers then you only had to ask, or use another shower. The maids put several bars in each shower daily. There are large hand soap dispensers in every one of our 4 ½ baths (toilets/ sink). We do not supply shampoo but Maria found you some when you asked for shampoo at the front desk. I do not know of any hostels that supply shampoo. We are very sorry about and noise but our rooms are air conditioned, have 6” concrete block walls between the rooms and to the outside and Tantalo is the closest bar which is a block away in the opposite direction so we can understand how you could hear anything . Did you sleep with the balcony doors open?
Yes, you had reserved all 4 beds in a 4-bed hostel room to make room #5 a private hostel room. You arrived about 11:00 am and Reggie explained the guest in #5 the night before had left very early that morning and was expected back anytime but she had left some items on one of the beds and locked in the locker. We were full and had no other room to offer but when she returned we knock and ask if she could come in and get it her things. You agreed, and your were checked in and provide a key so the room was private only to you. We will take responsibility for the error in not changing the sheets on the one used bed in that room due to your early check-in. What I do not understand is why you did not make the desk manager aware of this oversight that day or the next or the next.
We welcome you back any time and hope you have safe and wonderful travels.

My wife and I stayed at the Magnolia Inn for three days in June, on the third floor in suite 3-C.
A beautiful room, quiet and luxurious, with panoramic views of the skyline and sea. The inn calls itself a hostle, but it is more like a hotel with some upscale hostle features, like AIR CONDITIONING in the dorm rooms which you don't find at the other backpacker places. But the rooms on the third floor are away from the hostle area and from the noise and chaos of the streets and are a delightful and peaceful sanctuary. Reggie and Sharie have found a perfect niche between the lower end places and the ultra fancy new hotels in Casco. The price is right and the inn is comfortable and inviting.

Room Tip: 3-C, great view, extra quiet.
