Taxi drivers will not find this hostel/apartment complex unless you tell them it is just up the road on the right past Einstein’s Head in the El Cangrejo neighbourhood, building number 57. The head in question is exactly that –a large sculpture of Albert Einstein’s head, in white, sitting on the lawn in the middle of the boulevard. The hostel is made up of a number of rooms on two floors of an apartment building, with a shared space consisting of a fairly well-equipped kitchen, small eating area and living room, and balcony, as well as a shelf of books for trade. We were initially put in a larger room on the top floor because the guest in our assigned room decided to stay longer, so we got to enjoy more space and a large balcony facing the backyard and downtown. A few days later we moved into the room we booked, for two people with a private bathroom, and it was still quite big, with a large writing desk and lots of wardrobe space, but the balcony faced the street, not nearly as interesting but still okay. There was an advantage to be on the same floor as the shared space – easier to pop out in the morning to make coffee. There was a mix of transient guests and those staying two weeks or longer, like ourselves – so we were able to swap travel stories and tips on what to see in Panama. The cleaning staff do an excellent job of keeping the rooms and common spaces clean and tidy, despite the odd messy guest. The location is not bad – the area is relatively quiet, there is a great bagel and sandwich shop, and brewpub, just a block away (New York Bagels, and La Rana Dorado), and many mini-markets and other restaurants within a ten-minute walk. You’ll want to take a taxi to take in tourists attractions – the sidewalks are in poor repair and drivers do not respect pedestrians. One last piece of advice, the city water system is notoriously unreliable – it was off once for over 24 hours, and another time for over 18 hours during the two weeks we were there, and the mini-markets run out of bottled water very quickly – so pick up a big bottle or two when you get there to have on hand just in case.
