The Westin Playa Bonita Panama
Ranked #7 of 115 Hotels in Panama City
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed February 11, 2012

My wife and I stayed at Westin Bonita Playa from January 31 - February 7 2012. We had been reading the TripAdvisor reviews since early January and were apprehensive about our stay.

Thankfully, we found nothing to support the complaints found on this website.

Upon entering the hotel the staff were attentive and polite. The concierge and reception staff speak excellent English.

Our 7th floor room had a fabulous ocean view - mangrove trees, pelicans and herons aplenty. It was really cool being able to see the ships lined up in the distance waiting to transit the Canal.

We ate at the Oceanica and Pacifica restaurants each day of our stay and the food was very good. There were no refrigeration issues and all of our food was properly prepared. Room service was great too and included with our package.

The pools and grounds are constantly maintained. Every staff member we encountered seemed to take their role very seriously.

We did not encounter any bugs until the final night of our stay, when we went to a Farewell Dinner that was outside next to some bushes. No bugs during the day and no bugs in the rooms.

There is a business centre with 6-8 HP workstations and the staff are very helpful.

Remember that the language of Panama is Spanish. Anyone travelling to the country should not feel entitled to have staff, taxi drivers or other personnel speak English. The concierge at the hotel can help you connect with an English speaking taxi driver if necessary. We recommend Anayansi Díaz (507-6558-9117) so be sure to ask the concierve for her by name.

My wife and I had a fabulous time and couldn't have been happier with our stay. We have a blog at http://panama.justinbeadle.net but I'm not sure that I can embed links in this review.

Room Tip: You can't go wrong with the ocean view.

We stayed here from Jan 18-25. It is a very nice resort but not five star yet. We stayed in a "garden view" before upgrading to an ocean view, The garden view was very large but it did not have a balcony. The view on the lower floors was forest but there is an old bus yard visible from the higher floors. The ocean view was great. The room was smaller but still very nice. The food was good, the variety reasonable but short on greens and desserts. The pools were very nice. It was not difficult to find pool chairs but shade was a luxury. If you are looking for a beach holiday this may not be what you are looking for. Twice a day the ocean recedes dramatically. The service at the beach/pools is minimal The drinks the bartenders can/will mix is limited. There didn"t seem to be much for activities but I am not sure. There was not evening performance but there was one lounge open with music. Over all we enjoyed the resort, it was just different from what we are used to. This is a hotel with an all inclusive option. It seems like they may cater more to conferences rather than touriists. I did not rate it higher because the service needs to be improved, and tipping did not seem to help much and many of the little things were missing (ie: making sure there was coffee, soap, each day, towel art, etc). We got a great deal so the resort was terrific for the price. If I had paid the original price I would have expected more.

Room Tip: Get an oceanview room

Yeah, sure it is new and sure there are some issues, The Resort is beautiful, the rooms were great and the staff improved daily during our stay there. Weather was perfect, side trips were entertaining and informative. Would not hesitate to reccommend it.

Room Tip: Ocean view was an upgrade but worth it.

We just returned from the Playa Bonita and had read the reviews prior to leaving and were worried, but I have to say that the resort was awesome.

I'm not sure where the people who say that this resort is terrible were staying, but it was not at the Westin Playa Bonita!!

The food was great, it was hot and the drinks were awesome. The staff (not all of them) do need some customer service training, but I'm on vacation, so if i have to wait for a few minutes for a drink, so be it.

The resort is still under construction but it did not affect my vacation in any way.

Do not be afraid to go to this resort, it's fine, in fact I would say that it is better that most of the resorts we have stayed at in Mexico, Cuba or the Dominican Republic.

Beautiful hotel that got finished up in a hurry. Ex. Drapes went up without windows being clean of construction dust. Disappearing beach was cool the FIRST day. Warned about mosquitos (very few in Jan) but not the sand flies, take medications with you for itch and antihistamine if you are sensitive to such things. Lots of chairs along the beach, but shade is at a premium. Very limited gift shop so don't forget your sunglasses.

The hotel is very close to the city and perfect for a gateway! We only satyed there for 3 days but I cant wait to come back. The rooms are spacious and beautiful! Last night we had dinner at the meat restaurant and the food was amazing, not only the meat but salmon too. The services always excellent as well. We highly recommend this hotel.

Beautiful facilities, but it only opened recently and they don't yet have their act together yet The reception staff tried hard, but didn't seem to know what they were doing. They gave us an "all-inclusive" because the requested rooms were available, but it took 45 minutes to check in. The rest of the staff was also learning. Unfortunately, we were there the night of the grand opening party (about two months after the opening), which was loud and distracting. The only food available was a buffet that had no interesting offerings. Great potential, but they need time.
