Luis Calvo set up the trip for us. We criss-crossed the country, and other than in Panama City, we stayed in lovely up-and-coming little hotels and got a good immersion in local life all over the country. Sometimes he took us to wonderful, tiny little restaurants. At one of them there were two choices -- the proprietor said, "I have this fish, I make it with spicy green sauce. And I make that fish, its in a red sauce." We hiked down a dirt road and climbed through and over boulders to get to a spectacular waterfall and deep pool at its bottom for swimming. He took us to crafts markets where he products were just beautiful and the sellers were often selling what they had made. Bicycling with hundreds of local people on Sunday in Panama City when they close down the causeway was wonderful. The half day on the Panama Canal was spectacular. Luis was deeply knowledgeable, perfectly prompt, and accommodating if someone mentioned a new interest to try to fit into the itinerary. It was a customized itinerary for the four of us for one week. Luis was GREAT.

Alex picked us up at our hotel right on time and we headed out of the city with 6 other people. We stopped for a coffee and bathroom break, which was much appreciated! We also stopped along the way to check out some tree sloths. We crossed a really large lake in a boat that was waiting for us in a village then started our hike up the river and into the cave! There was a handful of loud teenagers there, so Alex let us hang back so we could enjoy the experience in peace and quiet.

The hike upriver is difficult, dark and a bit dangerous. Head lamps are provided, but it's really up to the individual to be prepared. You'll get very wet and there is no place to keep anything dry once you enter the cave. Leave all belongings at the guarded shelter at the cave entrance! Alex will politely mention this, but it's not really a suggestion. Everything you bring with you will get wet! Dry clothes for afterwards can be left in the guarded shelter or back in the van across the lake. Tight water shoes with nice thick soles (Merrells worked for us) are best. No crocs, no flip flops, etc.

Once inside the cave...well, wow. It's amazing. It's full of rock formations, bats, small waterfalls. The cave opens to the sky in a few spots, but in others its totally dark. Alex took great care when anyone was having trouble, but we were a pretty athletic and determined group. The key is to walk very, very slowly.

I would do this tour with Alex and Xplora Panama Tours anytime. We were both so glad we chose this company and this guide!

Alex picked us up from our Panama City hotel and drove us a long way to Lake Bayano for a cave tour. He was so personable and easy to talk to. We felt so safe with him and Manuel-especially when they very competently led us through the cave which at times had to be navigated by swimming. I liked the way Alex stayed in front and Manuel stayed back behind. Our 9 and 12 year old boys loved the experience as well. My favorite part was the homemade tilapia lunch at the end. So simple and so delicious. It could not have been a better experience for us. Thank you Alex!

We really enjoyed our guide, Alex. He was incredibly knowledgeable and easy going. He even dropped us off at the Locks at the end of the tour in order to save us some travel time, which was great because we only had one day in Panama! We saw a lot of interesting animals and had an enjoyable walk through the rain forest.Request Alex if you can!

first off--ALEX is the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we were late from the start and he was patient and waited for us. it turned out that my boyfriend and i were the only ones on the tour. he drove us to the location, a good ways away. HIGHLY RECOMMEND using a walking stick! I wasnt going to, but ran back and got it and so glad i did! please know, this hike is not for a beginner! i run marathons and this hike was a bit difficult. the ups and downs and mud and most of all the humidity really get you! Alex cleared the way with a machete and knew so many things about the birds, animals, and area. we ended up at the waterfall, we jumped in and cooled off and off we went back to the car. it was an exhausting hike, but ITS WORTH IT! the views, the jungle, the animals, all make it worth it!. Alex even dropped us off at the bus terminal, (we were headed off to costa rica that evening) and he dropped us off, and helped us with our luggage and put it in a place for a few dollars. we gave him a tip, please tip him! hes amazing! thanks xplora and thanks alex!!
