“Stylish property for a taste of authentic Panama ”
Reviewed November 21, 2013 via mobile

Loved this stylish property on the edge of Panama City's old town. The owners are actively involved in the social and economic development of the historic quarter and it shows in their passion and knowledge of the old city.
The free guide produced by the hotel left in the room is intelligently written and unlocks some of the treasures of the area.

The property keeps alive some of the local history and has a period style and atmosphere capturing the elegance of French turn of century of the century Panama together with American, and Latin touches.

The old town remains in places dilapidated but it is safe and a pleasure to explore on foot. Not only is there a visible police presence on most blocks the local people are friendly and welcoming so you feel at home.

Our suite was like a large vintage apartment. High ceilings, hardwood floors, panelled double doors, ceiling fans. Large living room with sofa and dining table, a small kitchen and stocked fridge and guest room with lovely bathroom with interesting tiles.

Carolina and her team including Miguel and Marvin are excellent; welcoming, natural and friendly.

The restaurant is very good and is where guests enjoy an a la carte breakfast.

Highly recommended.

Dear Andrew,

What a lovely review of our hotel. Thank you so very much for the thoughtful and incredibly kind words regarding not just the hotel, but the staff and neighborhood -- all things about which we are incredibly proud. We remember you both very well, and very fondly. On behalf of all of us here at Las Clementinas, we hope you return some day.

Safe travels,

Carolina

This hotel successfully developed and installed its own style, its own character. Rooms are very well-appointed and tastefully equipped, at least the one we had. Needless to say that our room was very clean. Breakfast was ok. You quite likely like the restaurant. Its location in the heart of Casco Viejo is excellent if you want to explore the most exciting part of Panama City.
The neighborhood is quite lively. You can expect some night life around, which also means that it can get a little(!) bit noisy. However, if you close windows you can enjoy a calm night.
Staff was very professional and helpful!!!
In any case, Las Clementinas is a very good alternative to the streamlined hotels you usually find in this town.
The hotel is located just opposite a police station. You find police all over Casco Viajo. It made me scratch my head, how many police it takes to turn a neighborhood into a secure area.

Thank you so much for writing about your stay with us. We're thrilled that you enjoyed your room and the staff and service.

Like you, we believe this is a much more interesting part of town to stay in when visiting the city. New Panama, while incredibly beautiful, is much like any other big city. Whereas here in the Casco, we believe you will get a richer cultural experience. And also, like you, we often scratch our heads at all the police around, but in the end better too many than too few! And by and large they are a helpful group of young men.

Not much to add to Emma L and Flying Socks' excellent and comprehensive reviews...
The Casco Viejo is definitely the place to stay in Panama City and it's lovely to see so many of its building being renovated in their original style; do yourself a favour and stay away from the newer part of the city.
Las Clementinas itself? In no particular order: old, classic, cosy, simple, clean, friendly, comfortable, bright, plus friendly service, seriously excellent food and a plant-filled patio/terrace with wrought iron furniture. The price tag may seem a little high, but remember that there are only a handful of rooms (which are huge as they include a lounge, kitchen and spacious bathroom). Breakfast is included and possibly the best I've ever had; even what they modestly called the 'continental bead basket'. Dinner didn't disappoint either and it's hardly surprisingly that Clementinas has been voted one of the best restaurants in the area.

Like other reviewers we debated whether to go for new or old when deciding where to stay in Panama City. Glad we chose old as we experienced this gem. Gorgeous property in the heart of the old town. The place was immaculate, with stunning decor and furniture. The owners have done an amazing job. The restaurant/bar downstairs is also great, very French feel to it. There is a roof top patio which has a great city view...a bar up there would be spectacular.
The Old Town us undoubtably under construction but this shouldn't put you off. This is up and coming for sure and already includes some fine restaurants and trendy bars. You also can see the real Panama staying here. It is still a developing country and the poverty is evident, literally on your doorstep. It is however safe and the people are friendly. Go now...in a few years I suspect it will have changed significantly.

What a kind review! Thank you so much for all the lovely things you wrote about our hotel! I agree that a bar on the roof would be amazing -- and I think we've managed to talk the owners into doing just that! Hopefully, if you return, there will be a great spot ready for you sit with a drink at the end of the day!

In the heart of old this building is one of the growing number of fully restored buildings in old Towne which still has some ways to go for full revitalization but is well in its way and picking up momentum over each of my visits over the past few years...

Pricey but PTY standards but worth it for a short visit where you want to be right in the action..

Being a city setting you will get noise at night into all hours but with a police station across the extra security can never hurt

We are so happy that you enjoyed your stay with us, and more so that you have appreciated the beauty of our Casco Viejo. It is, indeed, undergoing extensive revitalization (and certainly can be a little noisy at times), but the vibe and energy of this pocket of Panama is unsurpassed. Thank you for staying and commenting!

We had a debate about hotel before visiting Panama city. The choice is between "the new" versus "the old" and we ended up choosing "the old". In exchange of high end chain, swimming pool, spa and gym, we went for the historical, characters and personal service. In this case, Las Clementinas in Casco Viejo. The whole area of old town is under a rapid and rather drastic gentrification, which renders it aesthetically uneven yet culturally exciting. Physically, maybe only 1/3 of the buildings have been renovated and they stand side by side with the collapsed, dilapidated, the neglected, the trashed. You can see the future of where this place wants to head to but more you are witnessing where it was and still is. But it is also an interesting place where boutique hotels and fabulous restaurants rise up from the historical buildings, like phoenix from ashes. Las clementinas is one of these places.
At the end, we appreciated our choices, with a little mixed feeling. By choosing a historical boutique hotel we have certainly let go of the luxuries like spa, gym and swimming pool. The rooms are all en suit one bed room apartment, extremely spacious with high ceiling and a full kitchen. The staffs are very friendly and wonderful in terms of making recommendations and reservations. Location is ideally central where we can walk to anywhere in casco viejo. Breakfast and its service are impeccable.
Now the parts that we think need improvement are the lackluster wifi service in the room. It was very weak to non-exisitng and we have to move around to find a spot to be able to connect. Also we found the water pressure very weak and the hot water lack of steam in the morning. Because of its location, it is also fairly noisy in early morning, typical of a town, but that doesn't bother us that much as we are early risers, but may be a problem if you want to sleep in. The double size bed is also pretty small for two of us. A king instead of a queen will be so much better especially given that the space is not a problem. Stairs only but we consider it as a workout so that wasn't a problem.
At the end, it is a choice that one has to make depending on what you look for in a luxury hotel and can live with or without.

Hello and thank you for taking the time to write your comprehensive review of our hotel and Casco. We're very glad you decided with the "old", and got to experience this part of Panama in all it's developing grandeur. We are also very happy to hear that you enjoyed our staff and, in general, the hotel and restaurant!

We would like to apologize for the issues you had with the WiFi and your water pressure. Unfortunately, in some of our reconstructed older buildings, due to the legal constraints on the remodeling of historic properties, things like water pressure can be an issue. While we've never had a complaint like that before, we do realize it is certainly not up to the standard pressure one might find in a newer property. Unfortunately, it is the same for internet signal. Although this is a problem country-wide here in Panama, coverage in the old town can sometimes be spotty, certainly. We apologize for any inconvenience with these issues, and hope that in the end the good experiences outweighed the bad.

We just returned from a long weekend in Panama City and had a phenomenal 3 night stay at Las Clementinas. It is in a fantastic location in the Casco Viejo, a short and safe walk to all of the sites in the old town. El Chorillo is close by and we were told to avoid walking too far in that direction. We nonetheless meandered all over the Casco Viejo, during the day and night to and from our hotel, and we never felt unsafe. Our room, number 6, had great views of the newly renovated properties around the Casco Viejo and the ones still needing a little love. We were also pleasantly surprised that our room was very quiet throughout the evening, with only the occasional city sound (dog barking, car alarm, etc.) disturbing an otherwise very restful sleep. Another terrific surprise was the breakfast included in the room rate. We had seen breakfast included on other properties' web sites, but did not realize it was included at Las Clementinas too. Finally, the staff at Las Clementinas was incredible! Marvin took care of all our reservations for the canal transit tour, dinner reservations, getting us to a local artists' studio, and making sure that we were well taken care of. There is a good reason that TripAdvisor continues to list Las Clementinas as a top hotel in Panama. We could not recommend it more highly . . . it is a fantastic property. Thank you!

Room Tip: No elevator, so better views means climbing more stairs. Worth it!
