We had a debate about hotel before visiting Panama city. The choice is between "the new" versus "the old" and we ended up choosing "the old". In exchange of high end chain, swimming pool, spa and gym, we went for the historical, characters and personal service. In this case, Las Clementinas in Casco Viejo. The whole area of old town is under a rapid and rather drastic gentrification, which renders it aesthetically uneven yet culturally exciting. Physically, maybe only 1/3 of the buildings have been renovated and they stand side by side with the collapsed, dilapidated, the neglected, the trashed. You can see the future of where this place wants to head to but more you are witnessing where it was and still is. But it is also an interesting place where boutique hotels and fabulous restaurants rise up from the historical buildings, like phoenix from ashes. Las clementinas is one of these places.
At the end, we appreciated our choices, with a little mixed feeling. By choosing a historical boutique hotel we have certainly let go of the luxuries like spa, gym and swimming pool. The rooms are all en suit one bed room apartment, extremely spacious with high ceiling and a full kitchen. The staffs are very friendly and wonderful in terms of making recommendations and reservations. Location is ideally central where we can walk to anywhere in casco viejo. Breakfast and its service are impeccable.
Now the parts that we think need improvement are the lackluster wifi service in the room. It was very weak to non-exisitng and we have to move around to find a spot to be able to connect. Also we found the water pressure very weak and the hot water lack of steam in the morning. Because of its location, it is also fairly noisy in early morning, typical of a town, but that doesn't bother us that much as we are early risers, but may be a problem if you want to sleep in. The double size bed is also pretty small for two of us. A king instead of a queen will be so much better especially given that the space is not a problem. Stairs only but we consider it as a workout so that wasn't a problem.
At the end, it is a choice that one has to make depending on what you look for in a luxury hotel and can live with or without.

Hello and thank you for taking the time to write your comprehensive review of our hotel and Casco. We're very glad you decided with the "old", and got to experience this part of Panama in all it's developing grandeur. We are also very happy to hear that you enjoyed our staff and, in general, the hotel and restaurant!

We would like to apologize for the issues you had with the WiFi and your water pressure. Unfortunately, in some of our reconstructed older buildings, due to the legal constraints on the remodeling of historic properties, things like water pressure can be an issue. While we've never had a complaint like that before, we do realize it is certainly not up to the standard pressure one might find in a newer property. Unfortunately, it is the same for internet signal. Although this is a problem country-wide here in Panama, coverage in the old town can sometimes be spotty, certainly. We apologize for any inconvenience with these issues, and hope that in the end the good experiences outweighed the bad.

We just returned from a long weekend in Panama City and had a phenomenal 3 night stay at Las Clementinas. It is in a fantastic location in the Casco Viejo, a short and safe walk to all of the sites in the old town. El Chorillo is close by and we were told to avoid walking too far in that direction. We nonetheless meandered all over the Casco Viejo, during the day and night to and from our hotel, and we never felt unsafe. Our room, number 6, had great views of the newly renovated properties around the Casco Viejo and the ones still needing a little love. We were also pleasantly surprised that our room was very quiet throughout the evening, with only the occasional city sound (dog barking, car alarm, etc.) disturbing an otherwise very restful sleep. Another terrific surprise was the breakfast included in the room rate. We had seen breakfast included on other properties' web sites, but did not realize it was included at Las Clementinas too. Finally, the staff at Las Clementinas was incredible! Marvin took care of all our reservations for the canal transit tour, dinner reservations, getting us to a local artists' studio, and making sure that we were well taken care of. There is a good reason that TripAdvisor continues to list Las Clementinas as a top hotel in Panama. We could not recommend it more highly . . . it is a fantastic property. Thank you!

Room Tip: No elevator, so better views means climbing more stairs. Worth it!

Panama was the first stop in our three week Central American honeymoon, las clementinas was beautiful. We were greeted with a bottle of champagne which we enjoyed on the roof terrace as we watched our first sun set. The hotel is stuffed in the heart of the old town and was a short walk from some fabulous restaurants, bars and cafes. The hotel/apartment was stunning with a great space for hanging out an d a luxurious bedroom and bathroom. The staff were super friendly, they helped us with the planing of our sight seeing and even offered to post our postcards when we struggled to get them posted during our stay. We will definitely come back and would recommend this as a great spot for anyone visiting Panama City.

Went for a family Sunday brunch and was delighted with whole meal. Service was first rate, not always guaranteed in Panama City, and food delicious in a Paris style brasserie dining room. Classic brunch options combined with some twists of their own. There are not many options for Sunday brunch in the city but this is worth seeking out. A treat!

The rooms in this all-suite hotel were fantastic, but it was the quality of the staff that was absolutely first class. They were extremely kind and patient with my young children (age 6 and 8), and went out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. When I called room service looking for plain cheese pizza for my youngest, Miguel went down the street to La Rana Dorado and brought it up to our room. The hotel also made all of the arrangements for our excursions, and they selected very age-appropriate activities. Captain Carl is not to be missed!! On the way out to his boat, our van stopped at one of the large resort hotels at Playa Bonita. Although it was a typically beautiful beach resort hotel, I was SO GLAD we had chosen to stay in Casco Viejo. We were able to experience so much more of the Panamanian history and culture than we would have at a more generic resort.

The on-site restaurant is quite obviously a neighborhood favorite, and was packed with locals for Sunday brunch. I ordered ceviche in nearly every restaurant during our stay, and found the best at the on-site restaurant in the hotel. Our experience at Las Clementinas was by far our best family vacation to date.

Room Tip: There are only six rooms in the entire hotel. The best views of are from the higher floors - althou...

Hello and thank you for the amazing review! We are so thrilled to hear you had a great time on your holiday with us, and I know you and your lovely children were staff favorites during your stay. Every day, someone would come up to me and tell me a story about one or both of them. Thank you, also, for mentioning Miguel. He is an amazing asset to us, and helping guests seems to just run in his blood. We hope you come again!

If you are fortunate enough to secure one of the six rooms in Las Clementinas you will be delighted with the experience. These folks are a class apart. The service is exemplary. My daughter needed medical care and they called the doctor to our room and went out to get prescription medicine late at night. The property is very nice and is located in old city. The main police station is across the street so you could not be any safer. Breakfast was wonderful. Overall it is one of the best places we have stayed in central America.

Room Tip: Because of the historical nature of the building there are no elevators. If you are lucky enough to...

The good:
The hotel is a little outside of the big city, in el Casco Viejo. We arrived a little early and even though the power had gone out (which is very common in Panama City) we were treated to the best mojitos I have ever tasted. The power was up very soon and after some fantastic ceviche we checked in to our room. It was fully equipped with a stove, dishware, cookware, fridge (mini fridge accommodations but nothing mini about it - really good prices too) AC, huge living room, shower, tv, balconies, and a game of dominoes. The staff always greeted us every morning (complimentary breakfast was so freaking good - get the french toast and brie), gave us directions, maps, recommendations and ordered a cab for us. The town is safe (stick to the east side toward the water) and there are great restaurants and bars in the area. A wonderful experience all around.

The OK: If you are going on a Sunday, things will be quiet at night. We expected this and it was fine. When I looked at the bill there were minibar purchases that we had not made. I let them know and they took it off immediately. So just check over the bill before you pay.

The not so good: We cooked dinner one night and the plastic lining of the pot came off in the heat. Better quality cookware would be nice. Not the biggest deal but we forgot to mention it to the staff.

Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience at our hotel. While we could not be happier that you enjoyed your stay (and the mojitos!), we're sorry to hear about the incident with the cookware. We normally supply cookware on request, and it is usually reviewed before being provided to the guest. We're very sorry that the quality control on this particular item slipped through the cracks and have already taken that item out of inventory once we read your review.

Thank you again, for your time and we appreciate all the feedback!
