“Old property, but Nice People”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 19, 2012

We spent a night at the DoubleTree while passing through Panama (going to Colombia). We checked in uneventfully and ate our cookies (they were warm as promised!).

Our room was fine. Nothing special. The only thing was that the door creaked and there was a loud A/C unit outside the door. The hot water was always hot, but it sometimes lost pressure for a couple of seconds. The internet wasn't working, so they brought a router and fixed it in 5 minutes. No big deal. :)

The staff were very helpful and gave us cookies whenever we asked. They made the experience so much better. We wanted to be away from the subway construction, and they gave us the room farthest away!

The building itself was old and not in great shape. When leaving the elevators, there was a really noisy A/C unit. And by our room there was another noisy one. The gym was being repaired, so it smelled like paint and construction.

Other than that, the place was great and the staff were so helpful. I'd stay there again, but don't hesitate to search for other places.

ALSO KNOW: Breakfast is $13.50 per person if you buy it at the hotel. We spent about $20 by booking online (for 4 of us). It might be better to book breakfast online. By the way, breakfast was amazing!

Room Tip: Floor 6 was nice and near the pool. Ask to be away from the subway construction if it is still going...

My husband and I arrived on July 10 to celebrate our anniversary on the way back to the States. About 40 federales, ambulances, fire engines, search dogs and various special unit vehicles were outside the hotel and street was shut down. When we checked in at desk we were told it was "general proceduure" and not to worry. This was while they were swarming all over lobby and restaurant whose manager admitted it was a bomb threat. He said the hotel had been searched for hours and it was safe. After returning to our room my husband was in the shower and I answered the door to find at least 10 Feds with machine guns and 2 dogs at my door. The head guy said "we're only practicing" and 6 of them searched the room. They opened the door on my unsuspecting husband even though I said he was in the shower several times. I resent being lied to and possibly endangering our lives. We will never come back to this hotel.

I've stayed at this hotel twice while on business in Panama City. The service is quite good. For example, I have had no problems getting multiple internet passwords for my various devices (ipad, phone, laptop), which has been a problem at other places. The rooms are clean, modern, and chic. I find the gym to be nice and the pool is pretty good. My only complaint about the pool is that some staff seem to go to the towel room to smoke and the towels smell of smoke. That problem should be addressed.

Importantly, I find the rooms to be quite good for sound rest. If you're in a room facing the front of the hotel, there is hardly any street noise. I've never stayed on the other side where there is construction from the subway.

I'm a frequent traveler to Panama and this is my hotel of choice. I've also stayed at Le Meredien and although it's fancier, I really think the Doubletree is comparable and a better value. The Doubletree is also much better than the Crowne Plaza, just down the street, where I've stayed as well. It's also cheaper than the Crowne Plaza.

Overall, this is a very good option for a low-key traveler. It's not luxurious like some of the high end hotels in Panama (Mirimar, RIU, Trump), but it's quite stylish, clean, and quiet.

Since wonderful bed and breakfasts range in the $40s, splurging $150/night at the Doubletree seemed an extravagance for our first night in Panama City but these two teachers decided to spoil themselves. Though the desk workers were very nice, services were lacking. Besides the overpriced $18 buffet breakfast, I had to search the city to buy stamps for three postcards. Why not have a few for sale at the desk? The rooftop pool is nice, but why not sell drinks at the rooftop bar or at least put in a vending machine? Guests came with coolers of beer from the local Rey grocerey store! The one night I wanted to sit at the lobby bar for a glass of wine, I had to go looking for someone to serve me. By the glass, all they had was "red." To pay, I had to hunt down a waitress from the restaurant, where there were all of three people dining. No concierge was available two of the three days. Work to do for this establishment if they're going to charge these prices for a basic hotel room you could find at a Best Western on Route 66.

Check in was handled efficiently although the Executive Lounge was closed - no reason given and no mention on the hotel web site.

Nice room with plenty of space but AC is awful - even on the lowest setting it comes on intermittently sending an arctic blast of air across the bed. WiFi signal was weak and did drop several times so ended up using the Business Centre instead which is well equipped and has very fast access.

Breakfast was very good and again the service was excellent.

Unfortunately the noise at night was unbearable. As others have mentioned the rooms are poorly insulated against noise. We arrived late on a Friday night after travelling for 15 hours so just wanted to sleep. There was a construction site below our window and work continued during most of the night. In addition there was loud music coming from somewhere outside that continued until 1AM. Saturday night there was no construction noise but there was very loud music again that could be clearly heard. At 1AM the volume increased to the point where it was impossible to sleep. Eventually the music stopped just after 3AM but by then we had decided to get up and go to the airport earlier than planned.

Room Tip: Take ear plugs

Dear Guest,

Thanks again for choosing us as your place to stay in Panama and for taking the time to let us know about your stay. We apologize for all the inconvenience you had during your stay.
Unfortunately the Panama first Metro Line, is under construction right now and all those noises come from the metro construction. We will have new investment to improve the noises coming from the street to have better noise issolation in rooms.

Regarding to our VIP lounge unfortunately it isn't open right now but it will be available next month.

Thanks again for your comments and we hope to see you back soon.

Excellant location located in the financial district. As always at Doubletree you are greeted with a warm chocolate chip cookie. Make sure that you double confirm hotel pick up from airport if setting up with hotel otherwise you may have a delay. Nice size rooms, new LCD televisions with good range of channels. Great rooftop pool, views can't be beat. Breakfaste Buffet is excellent and service is prompt and friendly. Lunch and supper also offered in full Serviice Resturant, menue in evening is somewhat limited but offers a nice selection. Wireless Internet while free is weak, poor reception and lose of single frequent, hotel did install Wireless Router in room to aleve the problem.

Room Tip: Business or vacation stopover location and price can't be beat

Check-in was friendly and efficient with the cookie offered (and accepted!).

I declined to have my bags carried to my room as I already had suffered 'pass the bag' at the airport whereby the taxi rep. hands the bag to the bag carrier (and wants a tip for the two seconds that he held the bag) then the bag carrier to the driver (another tip) and then by the driver to the hotel concierge (another tip)...This comment is against the airport not the hotel.

The room has obviously recently been renovated; it was clean tidy and spacious. The bathroom also was clean and in great condition, very well presented by room service.

The room overlooked a busy road and was located on the first floor however there was no intrusion from traffic noise (or from the church bells). The air-conditioning however was very noisy.

The Wi-Fi connection was fast and reliable. An access code was given for one device however other devices could be added upon request. Internet access is free of additional charge (as it always should be!).

It really bugs me that bottled water is not included (or at least one bottle to see you through the first night). This is only a partial rant as the mini-bar price for water was acceptable.

The coffee machine uses coffee pads however the quality was really quite good (which it should be given the location). Unfortunately, the coffee supply was not replenished through-out my stay. I hope that this was a mistake and not policy.

Room service breakfast was reasonably priced ($8.00 for a regular breakfast) but somewhat disappointing in that the 'basket of homemade bread' ended up being a couple of slices of Bimbo. The rest was fine.

The bar prices are very reasonable, around $2.00 for a Panama beer and some nuts; Panama beer is highly recommended.

Check-out was equally efficient.

Overall, I recommend this hotel for business travel; having visited the Meridien I could not see any real difference when compared to a Meridien regular room therefore would not recommend paying any more than the reasonable rate at the Doubletree.

We are glad our guest rooms were of your satisfation and our front desk staff service was of your total pleasure as it shows that we are doing right.
