We decided to book at room at the the new Wyndham Garden City based on their website before there were any reviews available. We were pleasantly surprised that the website offered a very accurate description of the hotel and rooms. This hotel opened in January, 2011 and obviously still looks and feels brand new.
Transportation: The taxi ride from the airport was $35, to the airport was $25. Taxi rides to elsewhere in Panama city ranged from $3 to $10. There is no shuttle service.
Rooms: The room was immaculately clean. FREE WiFi!!! The entire room floor was tile. The air conditioner had a slightly moldy smell, however. The shower was HUGE, but it took a minute for the hot water each time we showered. You will need to put your room key in a slot next to the door for power, which seems to bother some travelers, but not us. There is a widescreen TV with HDMI and serial cable inputs, should you want to hook up your laptop. There was a desk, but no power outlets were anywhere near it. There was one outlet behind the desk, but it is immovable so it was useless (poor design). There was also a chair, closet, mini bar, safe and room-darkening blinds. The king sized bed was very firm. The hallway floors are also tile and thus are VERY loud. We were woken up the first night by people coming back in the middle of the night, but they were talking loudly. The view was nothing special at all; the hotel is surrounded by buildings
People: Everyone at the hotel was very friendly and spoke at least some English. However, they were unable to answer some basic questions about the neighborhood and most seemed to be new to the hotel industry. Service over all was very professional and we never had to wait to be helped.
Location: The hotel is in an "ok" area. Not much to walk to besides casinos, but with $3 taxi rides, who cares? The neighborhood is safe.
Food: There is a very nice continental breakfast with scrambled eggs, tiny sausages, cereal, pastries, bread, fruit and juice. There is also a small bar, but we did not use it.
There were also two computers and a printer just off the lobby that appeared to be free to use, although we did not do so. There is also a fitness center and conference room.
All in all, we enjoyed our stay very much and would not hesitate to recommend this hotel, especially at the price we paid, which was under $100/night.
