Checked in at past 10 p.m. and the hotel was overbooked and the Front Desk staff readily upgraded our room to the "Executive Level" at no extra charge. The hotel's hallway and room had this very peculiar smell of a "sour humidity" that can overwhelm you once you step out of the elevators that followed you into your room. The staff at the bar was generous on both nights with their complimentary popcorn once she noticed how much we liked them. The concierge was able to arrange for an all day tour on short notice and made all our restaurant reservations for the next 3 nights as requested. A glitch happened on one of them however, with no apology or explanation on how it happened.

We stay here because it is very convienently located in the banking/business district. We always request an executive room on an upper floor with a gorgeous view of the Pacific and ships in the distance waiting to transit the Panama Canal. Be sure to ask for a room with a wall between the bathroom and bedroom instead of glass. The breakfast buffet continues to be outstanding. We had a very relaxing lunch by the pool. Their Arts restaurant has a parpedelle that is to die for. Each night the chef serves a different complimentary amuse bouche. The lobster was delicious. The sushi and sashimi at the lobby bar was decent but the sashimi has way too much rice. It all could've been a little fresher, perhaps because we ate there on a Momday. This was the first time we've stayed here without any smell of humidity in the hallways and rooms. Before even paper in the room would be moist. It was perfect this time. Perhaps because it's the end of their summer (dry season)?

This was my third trip to Panama and my first stay at the Hotel Riu Plaza Panama. In terms of overall service, I would rank Panama probably the worst in Latin America and I have been to most of the countries. I had to come back to Panama (I would not come back to Panama voluntarily) for work to attend a conference. The service at this hotel was awful and confirms my opinion of how Panama ranks against other Latin American countries.

My first time in Panama City, for business. My two day stay at Riu Plaza Panama was impeccable, excellent rooms, everything available on-site. Decent restaurants, from casual by the pool, to more formal inside. A really impressive morning buffet, good quality food & spacious seating (maybe feels a little like a large railway station reatuarant..). Helpful and friendly staff. And a very convenient Business Lounge, where you get away from the always busy and inevitably noisy lobby space. In summary an enjoyable and business efficient stay, that made me feel at home in Panama!

OK, so my husband and I decided to give the brunch at the Riu another shot, since we felt that the staff has probably turned over since our last visit (see my previous review). The Riu has some large signs posted around town that advertise Sunday brunch (a personal favourite of ours)! Plus, there are not many brunch options in Panama.

Well...what they serve from 12p-2p on a Sunday is NOT BRUNCH! It's lunch at "brunch-time", and technically brunch starts at 11am.

They have quite a large buffet of lunch items, but NO EGG DISHES at all (and you can't order one either). I think they feel they can call it brunch because they include 1 mimosa per person for the hefty $39.00 price tag/pp.

Nothing really stood out as delicious and although there was variety, none of it was worth the price tag or the calories.

The service was better than before and has definitely improved, but it really makes no difference if the food isn't worth going back for...

We gave them another opportunity to try and have our business, and once again they failed. We will not be heading back here again. Pity, it's a nice walk for us on a Sunday...

We are still in search of a delicious brunch option in Panama...

The hotel is located near the financial district and also is walking distance to a shopping center. Rooms are fine but nothing special. Gym is not as good as expected though it has a nice sized pool for swimming laps if you want to workout. Breakfast is a bit weaker than expected as well. However, if you are looking for a basic, safe place to stay while on business, the location makes up for most shortfalls.

Room Tip: Try to get a high floor with a view of the city and ocean.

I was in Panama on business, so can't comment on whether this is ideally placed for tourists - but it did seem very central. The foyer is very impressive and I had a good room on 28th floor, a small suite, that included access to the lounge (free booze and nibbles - but a bit sterile and lonely if you are on your own). The breakfast is amazing with so much choice - ranging from a very healthy salad bar to a full on mexican nachos with meat and a huge tray of bright yellow melted cheese. Lovely fruit or doughnuts to follow. My only small criticism is that I would like the coffee to be more free flowing - there are so many guests and tables that it was a bit slow - everything else is help yourself, as much as you want, so no complaints. The restaurant was lovely too - and not too expensive (about $120 for lovely meal for two and bottle of wine). They have a deal that you can pay $30 for all the benefits of the club service in a normal room - club lounge/free mini bar/15 minute massage & letter and gift from manager (although I got neither of the last two). You can also pay $30 for a late check out (4pm) that was very helpful. I treated myself to a massage - 60 minutes for $65 - lovely

Room Tip: If you can afford a suite, it includes a free mini bar, access to lounge and other benefits. If not...
