I don't plan to stay here again. There are many reasons to come back. Spacious rooms, comfortable, nicely decorated, free minibar (a few cans of soft drink and water). Good breakfast (much to choose from) but not top quality product (not many cheeses and no good ham for example), excellent locations. Nevertheless, the reason not to come back is the smell of mold and the damp in the room. My clothes were all damp when we left. Some tripadvisor advised to take a business luxury room on one of the top floors to escape from the mold. We did that. Nice view over the pacific, but nevertheless that smell

Pretty modern hotel near the financial district. Really spacious rooms with a great view through wall-sized windows. Also has a really good pool and the staff are extremely helpful. The breakfast is really grat and offers lots of choices!
The hotel has color-themed different floors. See of you can get your favorite color for room decoration and lights.

It's kind of a bad habit that I assign a baseline TripAdvisor star rating to a property when I first see the facility and my room. Entering the bright, open, clean lobby of the Riu, and then seeing my fairly spacious 15th floor room, I set that baseline at 4 stars, with the definite potential for 5. As my stay wore on, the visit oscillated between 3 and 4, never reaching 5. I was ready to give it a 3 until the last minute, but great service at the end merited a 4.

Some background: I was in town for four days to attend/present at a conference at the Continental Hotel, about 4 or 5 blocks away. I opted against staying in the Continental because of the reviews on TripAdvisor. Although it was annoying to have to walk to the Continental-- crossing a very busy avenue with no traffic lights nearby, making my way through the steamy air or periodic bursts of rain--I think I made the right choice. My colleagues at the Continental complained about sleeping because of the traffic noise. My room on the 15th floor, by contrast, could have been a sarcophagus.

Here are the elements that deserve 4 (or 5) stars: Location--in a nice part of the city, in the shadow of the "Revolution Tower," which looks like a screw. Decor: very modern and new. Sleep quality: room was quiet, bed was comfortable. Shower: "rain" style large overhead nozzle, plenty of hot water. Ample outlets throughout the room. Nice couch and work area in the room, as well as a good view. Check in and check out: very quick and efficient.

Now the elements meriting 3 (or below) stars: Traffic intake in the driveway at peak hours (lines of cars stretched down the street for blocks), as well as masses of guests waiting for cabs who would block the hotel entrance. Shower/tub floor is incredibly slippery. Hold onto the handle in the shower! Bathroom floor was chipped near the toilet. Kept thinking there were ants on the floor (or worse). Disappointing gym--several cardio and weight machines, but not a single dumbbell, free weight, or even mat. Spotty--at best--phone pickup at the front desk. Clogged toilet and sink drain that didn't open.

I was pretty much resigned to a 3 when I couldn't get anyone at the front desk to answer the phone to set up a wake up call. I didn't want to go down to the front desk (I had changed already), and my 6 or 7 calls were never answered. That is a sign of slipshod service.

The staff redeemed themselves at the last minute, however. A kind concierge helped me prepare a large package for pickup by UPS as I was checking out and in a hurry to get to the airport. She called UPS and expedited the whole process and promised to personally supervise the pickup.

In sum, this hotel has 5-star potential, but it must take care of some of the details with the service and with the bathroom amenities, upgrade the gym, and solve the vehicle and pedestrian flow traffic at the entrance.

Great location overall. Stayed with friends from work for a few days. We will be staying there another couple weeks for a event in November. Rooms are clean and front desk was helpful. The small kiosks for quick food at the foor at perfect. FYI. Coffee is phenomenal.

We were impressed with the RIU from the valet parking attendants to the service personnel and comfort of our room. Living outside Panama City occasionally we stay overnight in the city to avoid driving home after an event. Since Felipe Motta's annual Wine Tasting Event was at the RIU it was a logical choice for the night. The rate on Booking.Com was great for a total of $139. The decor is varied in bright shades of blue, green, and orange with brown and silver accents. Very modern and the designers did a great job creating a pleasant, but colorful environment. Our room was very spacious with a view of Panama City's busy city life. Amenities were top notch to include a limited free mini-bar. Where do you get free sodas and beer in a mini-bar? The RIU. Also bottled water. Beds were comfy with top quality linens. If someone could invent ear plugs that cut out the hum of a/c, I would have been in heaven. I have this problem no matter where we stay. A couple favorite features were double sinks in the bathroom, lots of electrical outlets, free Wi-Fi and bottled water. Included breakfast buffet was very generous and on the par with a Sunday brunch at some hotels which charge $25-30. We had sushi after the wine tasting at their sushi bar and were a little disappointed in the freshness. We are Sushi snobs so maybe too picky. Also only served saki in individual cups instead of a choice of carafe service. We came in contact with an individual a few years ago that is now working in Valet Parking at the RIU. Carlos is very personal and gave me some insight to the ownership of the RIU which seems to make the employees happy to work at this hotel Look forward to the event again next year and spending the night. We have stayed at the Veneto, but found the RIU nicer, only distractor is Casino at Veneto, but not RIU. RIU is 7 or so years newer than Veneto.

I stayed in this hotel when it first opened and again last year. It is a beautiful hotel, spacious, well decorated with comfortable rooms and good dining options. However, some of the customer service leaves a lot to be desired. The bell boys were great, but I found the reception and coffee shop staff to be quite unhelpful and glacially slow. If they can sort this out, then I would recommend this hotel.
