We had a very comfortable staying in Riu in June-July 2011. From the point of view of pretty experienced travellers, who enjoyed asian and european 5-stars we can say that Riu meets 5-stars requirements pretty well.
Especially we liked stylish floral design in the rooms and amazing breakfasts, ah...and awesome views from the windows)
I was astonished to read negative review of this hotel and would like to comment on some points. Someone here mentioned "moldy musty smell" in the hotel. Well, to some extent that's true. We felt it in in the rooms. Those huge windows in the rooms are not expected to be opened, so the access of fresh air is not enough, no matter how good the air conditioning systems are..but let's consider that in a tropical country it's hardly possible to create 100% comfortable temperature+humidity inside, isn't it?
Regarding "Capital take away" pastries there were fresh and tasty. Don't be afraid to try them)
All staff speaks english and is very friendly, polite and helpful. E.g., they kindly answered to all my questions about places we needed to find in the city. Room service people picked up phone calls 24/7. Wi-fi was pretty fast which is important for business travellers.
We didn't like much the swimming pool as it's too small and children-friendly depth) But the bar zone by the pool was nice.
All in all, if we need to go to Panama again we will make sure to book to Riu ....

We stayed 5 days at this hotel in June 2011. We had a rate that included breakfast and also access to a lounge that had snacks and drinks included. Both of those features were nice, the breakfast had a large selection of fruit, cheeses, breads, cereals, eggs, etc.
That is all the good part.
The rest was terrible, the room temperature is preset to freezing, you have a thermostat but it does not control the basic temp of the room. When you leave the room the electricity goes off and when you come back the room smells musty, I guess the humidity in the city doesn't help. Everything was always wet, your clothes, your book, nothing dries so don't even think of washing anything in your sink you'll take it home wet.
We tried to book a tour but the hotel has no attractions brochures, the numbers they gave us for Gamboa resort were bogus, one was an escort service.
Got a credit card stolen from wallet in the room. Didn't even notice until credit card company called me about charges made on the card.
There is a convenience store in the lobby but the attendant was in no hurry to get the line moving there were 6 people in line and she was taking her sweet time to put things in plates and taking it to their tables in slow motion got frustratede and left.
Took a taxi to the airport at 7 AM that was advertised for $15 per person from 6 to 8 AM but when we got to the airport the driver said it was $40 for the 2 of us.
It might not be the hotel's fault maybe it is the people who give the hotel a bad image. Sorry RIU.

My husband and I stayed in this hotel for the first 3 nights of our trip around Panama, then stayed at 3 other hotels on our journey. The hotel is gorgeous with beautiful and modern rooms. The pool is awesome and fun! The hotel itself has a crazy musty smell in the elevators and hallways to the rooms. The location is safe and in the heart of Panama where we enjoyed walking around. The staff spoke both English and Spanish and I felt very comfortable there, the beds are comfy and the buffet breakfast was BEYOND amazing. We asked for directions to Pedasi, 5 hrs away on a secluded beach, and the staff went out of their way to help us. Overall, it is wonderful and beautiful!! The only downside is the smell in the elevator, hallways, and our lack of Spanish (our fault, not theirs, you need the basics for the pool bar..got really used to saying vino blanco (white wine) :) Another great thing.. free valet parking (tipped when brought back)

We stayed at the Riu for 3 nights in June 2011 before traveling to another part of Panama. The hotel is very nice and new. There are several restaurants with good food and with the exception of the sushi restaurant, the prices are very reasonable according to American standards. The pool area is nice, but come 2pm the pool is in complete shade due to the shadow of the building. The pool attendant Horacio was great- he was very quick at getting us everything we needed and gave good recommendations about where to go in the city. The rooms were very nice but one of our sinks were clogged. We complained on the first day and it was fixed right away but the next day it was clogged again and we didn't bother letting the front desk know again. There is a smell of mildew in the halls which is surprising since the hotel is brand new but this was not present in our room and really is not that bad. We were on the 28th floor and had a beautiful view of the city and the pacific and could see the causeway from our room.

Our biggest complaint is the concierge. We tried on two occasions to ask two different concierges what there is to do in the city and they could not offer us any suggestions other than the few full day tours that we were not interested in that they were selling. Their knowledge of the city and the country of Panama was embarrassing. We told them we wanted to go to the Pearl Islands via the ferry that leaves from the city and the concierge fought with us saying that the pearl islands were in San Blas on the Caribbean side. She laughed at us when we said she was wrong and they were in the Pacific 30 miles off the coast from the city. After telling her to get a map so we could show her, she came back 10 minutes later with one and we showed her where the islands were. We then thanked her, went to our room and looked stuff up ourselves on our cell phones. For a large hotel, Riu should be embarrassed by these concierges. Our only other complaint is that the spa was completely books for the weekend we spent there but that is understandable.

If you need a cab, walk off the hotel grounds. I asked to go the the causeway and the cab at the hotel wanted $20. We walked to the street directly in front of the hotel and we got the same ride for $7.

We were lucky enough to run into a private driver who offered to take us around the city for a very reasonable rate. He paid for his own entrance into the Canal Museum and other attractions we visited and acted as our tour guide too. He was very knowledgeable of the city and country and chauffeured us around in a new Chrysler minivan for 2 days. I recommend contacting him if you're heading to the area to see the sights. His name is Arturo and he can be reached at ArturoVenegas11@hotmail.com or 665-69386. He spent a year studying English in NY so he is very fluent. He if young and has a wife and 3 kids.

The Riu is a beautiful hotel in the midst of Panama City's business/financial district. The front desk and concierge personnel were very helpful, and thankfully, spoke decent English. Staff very efficiently assisted the seminar we attended at the hotel and the food was excellent, if a bit pricey. We understood that the hotel had only recently opened and therefore has some wrinkles to work out. As such, my recommendations would include, since this is supposedly a 5-star International hotel, that more of the service staff speak English. The hotel should either make this a hiring requirement or offer classes for the personnel. It was very difficult communicating with the housekeeping staff, VERY few of whom spoke English, as to our needs and others attending the seminar expressed the same problem. Many of the wait staff were also limited in their bi-lingual abilities. It took the better part of an hour to get our table's hor d'oeurve order placed in the bar due to the communication problem. Room service turned out to be a huge disappointment. Not only did our ordered food not show up in the time frame promised, but even after I called to inquire it was another 10 minutes before delivery and then showed up cold (obviously the original order had been sitting and that was what was delivered without ensuring it was warm).

This recently opened deluxe hotel is located in the heart of the financial/business district, close to restaurants, malls, and with breath-taking views of the city. Staying only two nights, we thoroughly relished the decadence of our deluxe suite with king-sized bed, spa-like bathroom, seating area, and magnificent view south to the surrounding high rises and the Pacific Ocean.
The buffet breakfast has everything you could wish for, the hotel is immaculately clean, the staff friendly and courteous and with a good understanding of English. We will definitely use this hotel as a base the next time we visit Panama!

This is a really nice hotel. Our room was spacious and beautifully decorated. The hotel has all the modern conveniences Americans are used to. The pool and bar area was very attractive. Staff was helpful and English speaking. I would book here again.
