“Casa Sucre Hotel in Casco Viejo”
Reviewed September 29, 2010

There is a lot of construction/renovation going on in Casco Viejo, many new hotels and restaurants being built. Good location, but on a busy intersection - so there is some street noise. Steep staircase up to the lobby - so may be difficult for seniors or disabled persons to manage the stairs.

Stayed in the Panama room. Quaint. Two french doors opening onto balcony. There is a wrap around balcony overlooking the street. There were only two chairs, so we claimed them. I suggested to the owner that he purchase some additional chairs for the balcony.

Renovated building. Someone didn't do much space planning - our bathroom door wouldn't open fully as it hit the bathroom sink. So, you had to open the door to where it hit the sink, then slide in and close the door in order to use the mirror or sink.

We ended up moving furniture around so we didn't have to keep stepping over our suitcases. I suggested to the owner that he purchase some luggage racks.

Thomas the Manager graciously assisted us with our luggage and allowed us to check-in early and the Asst Mgr was up at 4 am to get our taxi to the airport.

Not a B&B - no breakfast. No coffee makers in room and coffee pot in lobby never had coffee. The manager said he was out of coffee. To bad Panama doesn't grow coffee....

When in Casco, be sure to visit Manolo Caracolo. We had an 11 course meal (tapas size) that was amazing.

We were pleased to find this B&B in the center of Casca Viejo also called Casca Antiguo. The owners graciously met us at the car rental place and let us follow them directly there. The B&B is tucked away. The room was fine and the free sparkling wine was a nice touch. We were very tired by the time we reached PC. We had a 13 hr layover in Mexico City so hadn't slept in 2 days. We had some food at a nearby restaurant which was very good, and went to bed early. The 1st morning of our arrival we went out leisurely exploring early in the morning. Alice was making us a nice breakfast. We arrived approx 8-9 minutes past the appointed time (9AM) and hubby and I were both separately interrogated at length about our whereabouts and why we were a little late. It was very awkward and not relaxing-- we didn't know we were on "military time." It was supposed to be a vacation for us. Due to our slight tardiness, our breakfast was given away almost immediately--- at 9:05AM. We didn't trouble her to make it all again. We drank some fresh squeezed juice and ate some delicious fruit and hubby ate eggs. If we had known military time was a major issue, we would have eaten elsewhere, in all honesty. Other than that, all was fine. We left after 2 days, as planned ahead of time, and went to Boquete which was just lovely! So, stay here if it is the neighborhood you want to be in, and be EXACTLY on time for breakfast of ask to skip it!

What an enjoyable visit we had with our hosts at Casa de Sucre. To be a part of Old Panama City was awesome! The B & B was beautiful, and our hosts did everything to make our stay pleasant and memorable. Casco Viejo has so much history, and we were pleased to see that they are retaining its history as they revitalize it. We would definitely return to Casa de Sucre for another visit.
