Owner description: We invite you to step back in time with us on a tour to visit the Embera tribe who still live in traditional villages deep in the rainforest of Panama. The Embera people are proud to share their culture and traditions with visitors. Spending time on a day or overnight tour with the friendly Embera people will touch your heart and is an experience you will never forget. Our founder, Anne Gordon de Barrigon, is married to an Embera man and began these tours to share the beauty of her Embera family and friends with others. Note: this page is for the tours offered by Anne Gordon de Barrigon's tour company, Embera Village Tours and not for other tour operators who also offer tours to visit other Embera villages throughout Panama.

We visited an Embera Village on the Gatun River. The village was about 20 minutes by dugout canoe from the highway. The village had 47 residents. The village medicine man took us on a tour of the village and pointed out various medicinal plants that they used. We also visited the village school. They cooked a lunch of tilapia, chicken and "Chinese" plantains (white when cooked rather than yellow) for us. After lunch, the men and the women put on several dances important to their culture. We then had an opportunity to view and purchase various crafts that they had made or that their relations in the Darien had made. We saw many birds, spider monkeys, iguanas, and a two toed sloth as we traveled along the river.

We went on this tour with Rudy of Rudy's Tours. Rudy is a great guide, speaks very good English (as well as Spanish, German, and Italian), and is very knowledgeable about Panama. He is a very safe driver and his vehicles are very nice. Rudy's wife Patty makes all of the arrangements for the tours and the price of the tours includes all entry fees.

what an amazing day!! Full of adventure, scenery, beauty and joy.
I cab driver picked me up at my hotel and took me to the river..( a very bumpy road to say the least). But when I steped down from the taxi... the fun began. An Embera young man was waiting in the wooden boat to take us to his hometown......which is down the river, in the tropical forest...Lovely place, took thousand pictures through out the day!. he also took us to the Cascade, though we had to climb, walk, cross the river...., etc... I felt like a real adventurer.... and to end the day, we arrived to the village, where we met the people, ate a wonderfull fish and fresh fruit, they explained how they live, played some music, showed us a few dances... and then we walked to see their school.... back to the boat.... back to the river.... and sadly enough.... the visit was over....

This is hand down the best experience we have ever had. We have been to over 20 countries over the past year, done hundreds of tours and spending the night with the Embera people has been the best tour thus far. They are open, warm, friendly and authentic. Unlike some tours where it's obvious the "locals"go home at the end of the day the Embera are home. This is where they life everyday. There was no fake natives. It's the real deal. Our guide Joshua was also a star. While he was not Embera he was very knowledgeable about not only the people group in general but also knowledgeable of the local regions flora and wild life. We learned so much.

We were the only visitors there and we're treated like extreme VIPs We didn't want to leave. The food they made us was delicious, swimming in the river was wonderful, sleeping in hammocks was so comfy and the children were such a joy to be around.

If at all possible when you visit panama take time to visit the Embera people. Your life will be the better for it!

village itself was phenomenal, the villagers did their thing even competing with rain and their crafts were some of the only souvenirs I have ever been happy to look at or purchase in my life. You start by taking a motorized dug out canoe up river to the village. Everyone came down to greet us and they were playing music. We recommend this tour to everybody. Dont forget to visit this tribe.

This was definitely one of the highlights of our Panama trip. You start by taking a motorized dug out canoe up river to the village. Everyone came down to greet us and they were playing music. You go to one of the houses where the chief describes the Emberra's life and then answers any questions. Included in the tour is a tasty lunch of fresh fish and fried plantains. You then have time to walk around and take pictures before being treated to a couple of dances and more music. There are wonderful hand made crafts you can purchase and you can even get a temporary tattoo.
