Owner description: We invite you to step back in time with us on a tour to visit the Embera tribe who still live in traditional villages deep in the rainforest of Panama. The Embera people are proud to share their culture and traditions with visitors. Spending time on a day or overnight tour with the friendly Embera people will touch your heart and is an experience you will never forget. Our founder, Anne Gordon de Barrigon, is married to an Embera man and began these tours to share the beauty of her Embera family and friends with others. Note: this page is for the tours offered by Anne Gordon de Barrigon's tour company, Embera Village Tours and not for other tour operators who also offer tours to visit other Embera villages throughout Panama.

You think you are inside a National Geographic Article. From when they pick you up in dugout canoes and take your miles up river to when you unload on the river bank to tattooed villagers in loin cloths and grass skirts. the Villagers are as nice as any one we dealt with and really appreciated our visit to them. They prepared fish that was caught that morning for lunch and performed a native dance with all the children participating. On the way back to the bus, they took us up a creek and we walked 20 minutes to a waterfall that was beautiful. I may never make it back to Panama but if I do, I will make certain the Embera Village is part of my trip. Make sure and visit their gift shop that is full of handmade crafts. From woven pottery to wood carvings they will have what you are looking for and is much cheaper than the street vendors in the city.

We were met by guides on a small beach and boarded some dugout canoes for a short ride across the water to the village. We were met on shore by men, women and children. They greeted us and led us to a wonderful large area where we seated ourselves to learn about their culture. The chief welcomed us and then we learned a bit about their weaving. The women danced for us while the men played instruments and the children played. They would tattoo you with a washable ink if you wanted and a small meal was served. Around the large area we were in there were displays of beautiful hand made carvings, baskets, beads etc. The prices were excellent and all sales benefited the village. The day ended with all of the women and children dancing and pulling us onto the floor to join them! It was great fun! As a good bye gift we each received a flower headdress before we boarded the canoe for our trip across the river. I would definitel recommend this great cultural experience to all who visit Panama.

This trip/tour was recommended by Richard Detrich, author of "Escape to Paradise...living and retiring in Panama".
It is an awesome experience....and yes, DO take money !!! The baskets are exquisite and are priced by the number of days it takes to make. Note the tightness of the weave and decoration.....this determines the price.

I took this tour with my cousin the first week of June and am returning with my son and grandson next month. Living now in Boquete, it is worth the price of a hotel room in Panama City !

The tilapia was the BEST ever.......

We went by private car to the river. From there we had a ride on a motorised long boat and arrived at the village. Some people say that this is all a put on show.
Honestly I enjoyed this day. We shared a meal and insight into the lives of the Embera people. You will find very young children and the elderly on the island. The teens are sent to schools for higher education in Panama. I was told by the spokesperson that the government do not help these people and that they rely on selling their goods. I bought some beautifully woven bowls and there is an array of goods to buy. There was a dance and musical show. It may all be a show but as i said honestly we enjoyed this day and i recommend it for others to see. I took some Aussie small koalas and the children loved them as it was something different.
