This is all relatively new construction, largely more expensive shops like gourmet supermarkets, coffee shops and hair salons, but mostly chains including Arrocha drugstore and Subway. This is not real Panama---but there is ample parking everywhere and traffic is good. I wouldn't waste my time as a tourist there. It is an upscale housing plan built on reclaimed land less than 10 years ago.

This is one of the few places in Panama city that has been planned property. It mainly an high-end location for leading Panamanian and multinational companies. It also has gated communities for the rich. This is an extension to the modern Panama city.

Costa del Este is a housing area. There are the usual shops at the entrance such as a supermarket pharmacy and a few other shops. There is nothing special here.

It is impressive to see the continuous growth of this area. It is a quiet and excellent place to live. Sea views are fabulous.

Costa del Este is a quickly growing artificial satellite town of Panama City, carved into what were previously coastal mangrove forests. Apart from the destruction of a unique habitat for the sake of making money, this town seems to have one purpose only: launder the highest amount of money in the smallest possible area.
Thousands of new apartments have been built in poor quality high rise buildings, many more are to come, most of the finished ones are empty. The number of banks exceeds by far the local demand. Rich Venezuelans, Mexicans and Colombians park their (often not traceable) money here in cash and real estate, and this is encouraged by the government who practically sells residential permits and citizenship for this kind of "investment".
Security is deteriorating in the area and daytime robberies in the street can happen. During rush hour it takes an hour to get there from the city (or to get out of there). Don't get fooled by real estate agents about the quality of life in CdE. The only good reason for living in CdE is working there...
