We completed the Soberania National Park hike and a visit to the Embera village near Gamboa. Our guide Miguel was fantastic and really looked to the needs of our older family members. His knowledge of bird species and spotting abilities was fantastic and really made a world of difference to a hike that easily unguided could feel like you're just looking at a lot of large trees. Overall the Pipeline road hike was incredibly educational and a moderate level of exertion was required.

While not a comment against Yala, I would if you have time discourage going on the Embera village tour in Gamboa and instead travel to the village along the Chagras river. We heard from others that had done the extended tour that including travelling by dug out canoe and it felt from their feedback that they had what they felt was a more "authentic experience". Really at the end of the day anytime you visit an "indigenous village" you take the experience with a grain of salt though and Rainald and Miguel were very upfront with this the entire time.

Rainald was a great host and super informative. We started with a drive past the mira flores locks and up the road paralleling the canal. We learned a lot about the history of the area. On our walk along pipeline road, we saw howler monkeys, toucans, coatis. We then did a kayak paddle on the Chagres river. It was great to learn about all the changes that have happen in the area towards sustainable practices and improving the environment. On the way back to the city, we wrapped up with a swim in a swimming hole that had a little water fall. We shared the water hole with a young sloth - our kids were so excited to see a sloth so close.

Reinald was a nice and enthusiastic guide. We saw beautiful flora and fauna on this trip and got a better understanding of ecosystems surrounding the canal area.

We fully organized a day trip to monkey island and lake Gatun with Yala tours, for my family. On the day of the tour, they canceled 30 minutes before our pickup time because we did not reconfirm the same morning. It was completely unprofessional and ruined our day. DO NOT BOOK with Yala tours, they are unreliable and do not follow through.
