Canal Inn
Ranked #36 of 78 Panama City B&B and Inns
Reviewed June 8, 2010

Thanks Franz & Maria for your incredible hospitality and sincere generosity - Gracias Por Todos!

My husband and I found ourselves in Panama for the 2nd time in a month (for work and leisure). We weren't particularly impressed with the last place we stayed at as the general "Personality and Personal Touch" was lacking so we thought we'd try another B&B, this time in the area of Balboa. We found the Canal Inn online and liked its charming green space as well as its close proximity to the Causeway (sites + restaurants), Albrook Mall + Artisan Market (shopping) and other important amenities. We didn't know what to expect though, so we came prepared with bed sheets and towels just in case we'd have to deal with poor quality beds/showers.

To our pleasant surprise, the room we stayed in (#8) although modestly decorated, was cute, clean, and the A/C ran great. An added bonus, the shower and water pressure was GREAT too. If you've ever been a hard-core backpacker, this place has the laid back, easy-going atmosphere you cherished in your 20s plus the luxury of your own private bathroom, A/C, free wireless internet access throughout the building, and daily maid-service -- oh, and a swimming pool -- although we didn't have time to swim in it due to our busy work schedule :)

Breakfast is served from 7-10am and you can choose between North American-style breakfasts or Panamanian-style breakfast. Cold beer/Water/Soda is available round the clock (only a buck a beer); they do your laundry for you for $5 (this was awesome since we had no time to do it ourselves - kindly inquire about it in advance)

As for the "personal touch" :

In the first 3 days, my husband sprained his ankle badly and Franz and Maria offered to switch us to a room on the 1st floor if we wanted + lent me a basin & salt to make poultices for my husband's foot in our room; I also desperately needed to find some artwork for a project I was working on and Franz let me borrow 8 of his own paintings for the weekend! Franz & Maria are better than family; they'll give you the shirts off their backs to make sure you are well taken care of.

I would definitely recommend this Inn to anyone. It's perfect for traveling couples, families, & low maintenance types like myself and my husband (ex-backpackers). If you're looking for 5-star luxury high-rise resort, go elsewhere. If you're looking for personality and sincerity, the Canal Inn is lovely.

Since my wife and I found the Canal Inn three years ago, we return every year to enjoy the pleasure of staying here. It is like being at home. Franz and his capable staff made us feel very much at home with their outstanding service and hospitality, we certainly liked the company of "Ramona" the pet monkey. Great coffee and a continental style breakfast got us off to a good start every morning.

The Canal Inn is located in Balboa, Panama. It is close to the restaurants and the night life on the Amador Causeway. The Canal Inn is beautifully decorated with a lot of artwork. The owner and staff treat you like family. The rooms are spacious and clean. The Canal Inn also has a swimming pool if you just want to relax and get some sun.

Franz and his staff were extremely friendly and helpful in meeting my every need. The charming inn full of tropical color at every turn was a joy to wake up to in the morning and a comfort to return to at the end of the day. The pool always provided a welcome cool-down experience. My room was clean and comfortable and provided a good night's sleep.

I arrived at this small inn after a full day of traveling from Washington State with my brother and elderly Mother, who was returning to visit the Canal Zone where she was raised. I had arranged the stay via email with the innkeeper, Franz, who helped set my mind at ease - "don't worry - we will take care of you". And he did, from the pickup at the airport in Panama City to providing a knowlegable guide (his nephew Chendi) for a couple days around PC and across the isthmus to Colon. The inn was very clean, with 17 rooms, and is absolutely filled with colorful and eclectic artwork and plants. The rooms we stayed in were each a bit different, with colorful prints on the walls and tile accents in the bath. The beds were a bit too firm for my taste, but the large tiled shower was fantastic. The A/C worked just fine. The small outdoor pool was a welcome relief after a day of sightseeing, as were the cold beverages from the kitchen fridge. We enjoyed the Panamanian breakfast each morning, with fresh fruit, eggs and a local alternative to hashbrowns of fried plantain or a type of polenta. The inn is located in the Balboa residential district, across the street from a local college campus. I felt safe walking around the block, but you need a taxi to go out for meals. The location made it easy to connect with roads going any direction-the city, the Causeway, across the isthmus, or the main highway across Panama. You could hear the city traffic on the Bridge of the America's, as the inn is located just below it, but it was quiet in the rooms at night. Franz was fluent in English and the staff was friendly and happy to help. This is a great place if you are not interested in being in downtown, want some personal touches in your inn, and prefer the quiet life to the night life!

Canal Inn was a very pleasant surprise. Very well located: just a few minutes drive from places of interest and from Albrook mall and airport, but yet very quiet and calm. The hotel is very nicely decorated and Frantz, the owner is very willing and very helpful. All the above really gives you a feeling of home away from home. The shower was the best we had along our trip to Costa Rica and Panama!

After having had some bad luck, Canal Inn gave us a warm welcome. What a pleasant surprise. Frank and his staff made our 2 nights stay very enjoyable. Excellent location, beautifull ambiance, functional and cosy rooms and very friendly and supportive staff.
