Holiday Inn Panama Canal
Ranked #23 of 115 Hotels in Panama City
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed April 19, 2012

If you want a view of the Canal, stay above the 3rd floor. Our 3rd floor room had a view of the trees and we paid extra for a Canal view. The toilet in our room didn't work, a problem the staff fixed immediately, but on the final day of our 3 day stay, the same problem happened again and this time in spite of repeated calls to the desk, the problem was never fixed. Luckily we were checking out that day since we finally had to resort to using the toilets in the lobby. The upside was our room was clean and the restaurant in the hotel was great. Very convienent to the City of Knowledge. For my money I am going back to the old world charm of the Hotel Las Vegas in downtown Panama City where I have stayed many times.

Room Tip: stay on 4th or 5 th floor for Canal view.

We just spent 3 nights at this hotel and were very disappointed, if we had been able to check out and go elsewhere we would have done but unfortunately we had paid in advance:(

We paid extra for a room with a view of the Miaflores Locks. Unfortunately the room we were given was on the 3rd floor with a view of the trees! We asked to change the room and were told that the other floors were booked and to come back the next day and they'd see if there was a room free. Unfortunately the next day we were told the same - come back later and we'll see if something is free! We were supposed to have a safe and a fridge in our room, but had neither....we asked if we could have a fridge and after further follow up we did receive one, however the safe never materialized.

The room was very, very noisey. We could hear the guy next door on his cell phone very clearly as if he was in the same room. The front also overlooks the train tracks and there are trains going all day/night. The hotel is also situated on a very busy main road and unfortunately the windows are not thick enough to mask the noise.

We went to use the pool, but were disgusted by how dirty it was...there was a foam floating on the top and the water was cloudy with dirt. Obviously they don't clean it daily.

This is a newer hotel, in an area that has nothing around it except the Univercity. There is one restaurant next door called "Taberna de Canal", which i can highly recommend. The food is exceptional but it's the only choice in restaurants away from the hotel unless you have a car to take you into the city.

I rate this hotel average because it is a newer hotel and everything was new and very clean in the hotel itself. Other than that i would not recommend this hotel unless it was for a one-night stay because the person is on business.

Stay at this hotel primarily for location proximity to canal and Meura Flores locks (5 minutes drive) with hotel providing shuttle at noon daily free of charge. Also close to Panama Canal Railway for exquisite trip from Panama City to Colon passing along side of canal and through rainforest at Gamboa. Cost $42.50 each takes one hour.
Trip on Panama Canal with Panama Canal Tours on Pacific Queen for half'day transit is worth cost $115.00 for five hours including lunch.

Hotel provides shuttle to large shopping mall called Albrook Mall free of charge at lunch hour.

Hotel associated with International Culinary School and meals differed nightly with buffet selections.

Close to road so you can hear road noise from heavy trucks passing. Swimming pool very small and needed better cleaning.

Room Tip: Ask for canal view room to see ships passing daily at least fourth floor or higher

My husband and I stayed 5 nights. The Panama Canal was right in front of our window!!! The accommodations were great and staff very friendly. The beer was extremely overpriced. You pay for one beer what a six-pack costs (about $3.50). The pool area was nice, but I never saw anyone using it. I know I didn't because meeting rooms were on all sides and you felt you were being looked at by all the people in the meetings... Such a shame. The Internet was free and on the 3rd night, it shut off. I called and they tried to charge me for a access card. I asked for the manager (who is extremely helpful), and they said I didn't have to pay. On the 4 th night, the Internet shut off again. I was so tired of dealing with staff and arguing, I just didn't use the Internet again. EITHER IT'S FREE OR NOT! it should free, so guests do not feel they are being taken advantage of. I have 3rental properties and would never charge my guests for it. Although this hotel is not in the hub, I do recommend it. You can take a cheap taxi wherever you want to go...just ask the price before getting in.

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for an upper floor canal view when reserving.

The major problem was on our third night there, when we had to change rooms as 4 or more drunken sailors and one lady were continuing their drinking spree in the room next to us.The lady was not a lay sister looking after their spiritual needs. Four plus drunken sailors in the room next door is potentially highly dangerous.
As a matter of safety even when young I always avoided such encounters but staying in a Holiday Inn aged 67 and 69 this is the last thing we needed.
Even in a new room we had very little sleep after this. The only compensation we received was that we were not charged for that night. This was totally inadequate.
The hotel has block bookings for ship crews. Another major hotel chain bans bookings by any group of single sex guests under 25 years old, so this cannot be an uncommon problem.
At breakfast there was no one to check us in , no orange juice, no bread for toast and no coffee, all had to be asked for.
The rooms at the front of the hotel over look the main Panama to Colon main road and railway as well the canal, all of which work all night and due to non existent double glazing and sound proofing are very noisy.
The food is very average and expensive but fortunately The Taverna next door serves good food at half the price
I am not one of the worlds great moaners as this is only the third really bad review we have ever posted in 14 years of travelling.

Room Tip: definitely not facing the canal but really not worth considering.

This hotel is very nice and very well located to Gatun Lake and the Panama Canal but for a hotel that trains its employees, its quite pricey. We paid $125/night here which was only $50 less then the Intercontiental! If you want an American chain that you know what to expect then this is a good place. Otherwise, just stay in the city!
