Asked the hotel concierge(Managua Hilton Princess) for a recommendation within safe walking distance.
He gave me the name if Mares Alta. Two short blocks from the Hilton in a safe neighborhood. I was blown away. Greeted by very friendly staff. Sat in the outside covered patio...pleasant evening breeze. My server, Luis, was most attentive. But the FOOD! I had the ceviche Peruano to start--huge portion of fresh fish amazingly prepared. Could have made a meal of this. Then, the main course--"fish of the day."....a grilled Dorado, with a garlic sauce on the side, salad and rice pilaf. One of the best meals I have ever had visiting a Central or South American country. Absolutely outstanding. And a bargain, to boot : U.S. $25.00 for the meal, two bottled waters, and a cafe Americano, including service. I recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting Managua, but certainly travelers staying at the Hilton or the Intercontinental, also walking distance.

My experience at Marea Alta was a very good one. On my first visit I had the Curvina. This is a local catch very similar to sea bass. The portion was twice what I am used to receiving, the preperation was perfect (several different chioces) and it came with two sides for only $9.00. The meal was so good that I returned a second time and had shrimp with rice. Prepared spanish style, it was also very delicious. priced at $12.00, again a great deal. service is what kept me from giving this location a 5 star rating. they are eager, but their English is rudimentary and made communication a bit difficult. This aside, recommended highly!

Marea Alta is good. If you're here, and don't know where to go for seafood, go to Marea Alta. The atmosphere is zero, but the food is good. And then you can go to either coast to have really good seafood, but for probably more than Marea Alta charges. Honestly, good value for money. And pleasant enough surroundings.
