“Friendly, Very Helpful Hostel”
Reviewed March 26, 2013

Friendly hostel with very helpful staff, especially Lena who was often on hand with tips covering San Salvador and the whole country (and no doubt beyond if needed). The location is in a safe area with good transport links.
Food avaiable at a reasonable price if you want it

Good points:
Friendly staff, the manager (Lena) is very helpful with travel advice and is available on the phone even when she´s not in the building. they can book bus tickets too. interesting selection of other guests, lots of latin americans and a socialable atmosphere.

Bad points;
The property has seen better days. i´ve travelled across the region for the last two months staying in budget places, and this is certainly at the lower end of the scale.
the dorm room was extremely hot but the fan made an awful noise so we couldn´t use it. no replacement was available.
there are LOADS of mosquitoes and no nets so i was bitten a lot.
the shower curtain was too short so the bathroom flooded everytime someone used the shower.
you aren´t allowed to use the kitchen.
the beds in the dorm room are really wobbly, squeaky and the bases are broken so have been replaced by pieces of wood which kept slipping off. the matress was a 1 inch piece of foam.

overall, a nice enough place to stay but in need of a refurb!

Thanks for review and comments we are always striving to imprive our place and the guests feedback help us do that. As I have mentioned before in these responses we are undergoing renovations throughout the hotel so there are several things still to be improved. The room this guests stayed in had been taken out of service as we have not yet done renovations here but as the dorms that are renovated have a slight higher price ($2 more) we offered this room as the guest insisted on a cheaper one, but it does by no means represent the hotel. The other dorms available have brand new windows where no mosquito come in (sliding windows) and comfortable beds and a decent hot shower to use. The shortcomings of the other room comes with the still faulting repairs that are to be made in the future. We are still of the most economic places in the area despite being in a better (safe) location than many economic hostels. However we are taking these comments in mind for when this dorm is renewed. Meanwhile we welcome our guest to take use of our other new and nice rooms and dorms.

Ximena's guest house is perfectly located with a mix of shopping and local fare in a safe neighborhood all within walking distance. Many great local eateries surround the area. Lena, the manager, speaks English and can recommend an itinerary for any age or budget. They can arrange onward bus tickets on site. We left San Salvador with the feeling we will return shortly.

Room Tip: Their website offers a list of all their rooms.

Property is slightly run down, but they are completing reconstruction work at the moment. I don't know how much this will changes things though. Showers are heated from electric head.

Despite the great service, the hotel is slightly over priced for what it is. However I understand from other travellers that other San Salvador alternatives really aren't great.

Do print off the pdf map to show taxi drivers as it is hard to find.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back are better

Yes we doing overall renovations so soon the place with gone through a face-lift after serving travelers for almost 30 years. Unless you are staying at a five star hotel where they have hot water pipes the most common way to heat up your shower in El Salvador is with electric shower head.
As for the price of the rooms, we have the lowest rates of the hotels located in this central and safe location. You might find cheaper but won't recommend it for safety and access to mobilize.
We are glad you enjoyed our service, hopefully we will be able to serve you again in the future.

If you compare prices you will see that this is good value for your money. We stayed in one of the private rooms with A/C. It was very clean. My husband was sick when we arrived and in spite of having limited supplies (due to their remodeling) they cooked us a supper for us. The next day they made us breakfast as well. Kept us supplied with fresh squeezed orange juice for a really great price. Their coffee is great too! The staff were fantastic. Lena had set up a tour for us but the tour guide had an emergency. Rather than disappoint us she had her husband take us on the Rutas de Flores. She was an amazing tour guide and we learned so much. She has a real love for El Salvador and it shows.
The location makes it an easy walk to the buses and to the Metro Center and lots of restaurants. We felt very safe on the streets.
If you are looking for clean, basic accomodations with excellent staff and access to Lena on the phone for help with planning trips, tours, dentist, general questions this is the place to go. Lena stopped by most evenings to see if anyone had any questions she could answer. We loved America and Flo - they were terrific and took very good care of us. WiFi worked well and they would also call a taxi if we needed one.
Don't overlook the postcards that Lena has made from Photos she took - at 5 for $1.00 they are a great bargain.
They are doing some remodeling and I think this place will be even better in the future.

Stay there 3 nights recently and the experience is just ok. First night I didn't sleep because of Mosquitos. They came into the room from broken windows and door so there is no way to block them. I got over 10 bites. Second night I was upgraded to a better room for free. Overall this place is ok, great location, wifi works, cold shower, noisy, affordable...

Don't buy any tours, bus tickets or taxi services from stuff! They tend to sell u expensive things. They cheat me to believe that my bus to managua will leave @6am and city bus won't be available before 5:30am, that I have to book a taxi from them. So I did. But actually city bus is available from 5am and my bus leaves @7am. A city bus would bring me right to bus station in 20 minutes for USD 0.2.

Room Tip: Don't book the dorm! Too noisy and lots of Mosquitos!

I stayed in San Salvador for three nights, but perhaps it was not long enough to know that this was a "great location", as other travelers have said. If you have to take a taxi or bus everywhere you go, I wouldn't use those words to describe any place. Yes, it is in a residential area making it quiet and safe, yes there is a cool bar a few blocks away (La Luna - don't eat there), but there are not any decent restaurants nearby, you will end up spending at least 6 bucks to get anywhere by taxi (forget about walking, the pollution is terrible), and hardly any of the taxi drivers know this hostel, making a hard-to-find address even worse. Could this still be the best hostel in the city? Sure, but I have nothing else to compare it to. The positives of Ximena's are this: friendly and helpful Spanish-speaking staff if you want to practice the language; English-speaking, Norwegian owner if you don't, who is an expert on all things El Salvador and will offer excellent travel advice; clean rooms with ACs and private baths; really good breakfast food; a nice courtyard to repose in; and a peaceful dining room that overlooks the street making for very pleasant mornings. However, the hostel is so quiet that just a bit of noise may wake you, such as the daily morning sweeping of the courtyard at 6 a.m. :-S Also, the third night I was there was a week after my first two-day stay, and I woke up in the morning with several bites on my midsection that weren't there the day before. I cannot be certain, but it seems to me that I shared the bed with some sort of bug(s).
