Hotel Marela is a modest, sparse but perfectly clean and acceptable place to stay, and quite a bargain. My room had an electronic lock, tile floors, a queen-size bed, a small nightstand, dresser, desk, refrigerator (empty) and a large closet. The bathroom was quite spartan -- just a few towels, nothing fancy, the shower drain was slow, and the hot water wasn't completely reliable. There was a flat screen TV but no safe, coffee maker, hair dryer, tissues, or other amenities. The air conditioner worked well. My window had an obstructed view, but there was a lovely pool and garden area to meet, relax, and eat breakfast in, as well as a gym. The breakfast buffet was quite good, and the items changed daily. They do serve lunch and dinner, but it wasn't something I'd recommend going back to (although food is not one of El Salvador's strong points, no matter where you eat.) One warning -- there is no elevator, so you may need to carry your suitcases up a staircase. The staff was very warm and welcoming, and there was a 24-hour armed guard who also functioned as a bellhop and maintenance man. This is not a place you'd want to spend a vacation in, but it was perfectly acceptable as a "home base" for doing business in the city.
