Podol Plaza
Ranked #30 of 112 Hotels in Kiev
Reviewed January 18, 2012

The hotel is in the Podol district a short tube ride from the Centre of Kiev. The tube is helpfully just across the street, and is very cheap and very easy to use. Podol itself has a number of great bars and coffee shops, and its not too hard to find somewhere to eat or drink that has a waiterr with a little english language on the main street. (though beware rip-off merchants tarantinos!)

The hotel itself surpassed expectations.The rooms were well furnished, the heating was good, the bathroom was clean and hot water was plentiful. Beds and pillows were clean and comfortable, and the mirror/safe/bathrobes/slippers were nice touches.The free wifi was extremely helpful and fast enough for uploads/downloads.

The breakfast was, compared to other hotels in this part of the world, very good, with decent bread, meat, cheese, boiled eggs, cereal and juice. The waiters at breakfast didnt have great english so some of the orders were wrong, but frankly if you cant live with fried instead of scrambled then you are going to have way more problems travelling in the Ukraine than the wrong type of eggs.

The hotel restaurant was very good and there was one waiter in particular that spoke immaculate english and made good recommendations.

The reception staff were very helpful, and the concierge was more than happy to book trips and arrange tickets and taxis.

All in all, for the price, the rating and the location it was a great hotel.

Room Tip: higher floors mean hotter rooms but less noise from the trams

The hotel is friendly and clean. Rooms are reasonable size. The bathroom was a bit dated but the shower had amazing water pressure. I was given a room facing the front of the hotel and as others have said, the trams do start at around 0530 ish – if you are a light sleeper then make sure you request a room facing the courtyard. Walls are very thin – could hear the couple next door arguing for three days – try not to get a room with a heavy snorer next door.
The restaurant is a separate building in the middle of the courtyard which serves reasonable food. You do need to try to attract the waiters attention as they are rarely in the restaurant and there is no indication that guests have arrived (a bell would be useful above the door). Breakfast however is very limited with some tired meats and cheeses. Coffee and juices taste mass produced and there is very little choice of alternatives. I discovered on the second day that they can cook eggs for special orders but it is not advertised anywhere.
If you do stay, check the price list of the inventory of your room,. It seems that they must have had people stealing everything from a towel to a wardrobe.
Security outside is 24hr but rather grim and makes you feel like you are entering your hotel illegally:-)
Would recommend this for short stays – is local to trams and shops -
.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a room facing the courtyard. Bring loads of movies - TV is only in Russian on all...

I've stayed at this hotel on four separate trips to Kyiv - I think its the best 'value for money' hotel in Kyiv. The reasons are -

- Two (!) Irish bars within 100 metres (good selection of beers and snacks when you get back from the office);
- Local restaurants and bars all have english menus;
- 75 metres to metro station;
- Very clean and comfortable rooms;
- Good security (but a bit gangsta!)

The reasons I didn't give it 5 stars -
- The rooms at the front of the hotel are a bit noisy - the local trams start at 06.00 in the morning and make a din as they rattle by (so you must ask for a room overlooking the courtyard);
- The breakfast room is a little small and gets crowded in the winter (there is al fresco dining in the summer);
- Breakfast is not brilliant (they dont advertise it but fresh omlette or fried eggs are available) :-)
- Restaurant is very expensive in the evening;
- Still has an old soviet feel about it (when you check out security check the room to make sure you haven't stolen the TV).

Room Tip: Book a room overlooking the courtyard - much quieter

Clean and peaceful hotel on the Podol area, very close to a metro station, a market, nice restaurants, the river: Anything you might want if you are a tourist in Kiev.
The staff is super friendly, the rooms are clean and quiet, and in general the hotel is very nice.
Just one thing: Breakfast is a disaster! Service is quite bad, tea and coffee are always cold, the buffet is unconistent, you never know what you will find, and you have no way to know you can order some eggs or a typical kasha unless you see someone else is having that. They need to improve on that, but even with this, we are very happy we stayed at the Podol Plaza. Thanks!

Location is good.Close to metro station.Wireless internet is everywhere and free.Free and safe parking for car.Walls between rooms are very thin so you hear everything what they talk and what they do next room.Bathroom is old fashined and very simple.Breakfast was very poor.I Stayed 4 days and everyday tea and coffee was cold.Security waiting outside look at you strangely all the time you want to enter the hotel, like you want to steal something.

Room Tip: Try to get a room next to free rooms as you hear eveything what happens next door including how they...

Podol is clearly the place to be in Kyiv (during summers that is). The Podol Plaza is a nice hotel with most rooms facing a calm courtyard. Rooms on 4th and 5th floor are elegantly decorated and spacious. Free Wi-Fi (working). Friendly staff. The nearby Kontraktova square is a hangout for punks and the like and dimly lit at nights. Metro station is just a few steps away so are shops, a 24h supermarket (gigantic choice) and other stuff.
