“Very convenient apart hotel”
Reviewed May 9, 2010

I have been frequently staying at this apartment-hotel. Its location is very convenient, close to supermarket, 200 m. from Arsenalna metro station. Several room types are available, including a luxury kitchenette and living room. They have good service as well; including taxi, airport transfer, security, room cleaning, laundry, direct phone line etc. Employees are friendly. Internet is not free, but for longer stays, they may give it free.

We are dissatisfied with the quality of the services It's not at all the “luxury apartment” described on the website. We were looking to an appartement to spend a week with a familly & a baby, and we were really disapointed with the Quality of services...

First, it is not acceptable having to climb 5 floors with a baby or having to ask 3 times to have a TV working. Second, we have absolutely no possibility to cook with a real oven and it is not a full equipped kitchen!

We would have admitted this situation in a 3rd world country, but we were told that Kiev was looking to attract new customers and was aligned with EU Standard. We can see that there is still a lot of progress to do to reach this goal!

The first action would be honest to do! for e.g; remove from the website the kitchen description which is in fact a lie: ("Fully equipped kitchen, including a full-size refrigerator, oven/cooker, coffee maker and a complete set of utensils and cookware".)

The second action will be to teach sherborne team to be more customer-oriented, honest and polite (We are used to rude ukrainien, but it was top of the top for this !). Paying 195$ per night, we were expecting another way of treatment than arrogant assistant answers. ("We cannot make exception for 1 customer" or "we cannot have 100% of our customer happy" or "why don’t you ask for a Jacuzzi in your apartment")

Problem can happen but the aim of "Luxury" is to guarantee 100% of customer satisfaction. Real professional would have proposed quickly a reliable solution to make people happy. In our case it would have been really simple to buy an electric oven (not a microwave).

Being considered as idiots by sherborne staff, we will also recount our experience! When asking for the root cause of the cooker problem we receive several contradictory lies answers. First answer: “reparation depends of Ukrainian Gaz company which is close for 1 week, Second answer: someone will come to repair the oven, but there is a risk of explosion… (we are now betting that the next answer will be that Gazprom has again raised the gaz price for Ukraine??)

A note to all our potential customers:

Sherborne Guest House undoubtedly is known for offering superb quality and impeccable service in all of our apartments, as well as its convenient location and courteous, professional staff all of which contribute to a concentual combination and superior value for money. This can be attested by the vast majority of our guests who have stayed with us over many years (we encourage you to visit our guestbook).

However, if like the customer from Luxemburg you have special requirements that need to be catered for, or you answer yes to any of the following four points:

* Need accommodating seven (7) people in a two-room apartment designed for a maximum of four,
* You intend to cook or bake exotic dishes, which require your kitchen to be equipped like a 5* restaurant;
* You are used to consistently raising your voice during conversation while speaking in a pretentious manner;
* Have stayed in scores of other hotels in Kiev and haven’t been satisfied once

we ask that you kindly let us know of these in advance in order for us to make appropriate provisions well in advance of your visit.

With kind regards,

Tamara Trotsan,
Manager

The experience was great. They gave us a luxury apartment for almost the same price of any average hotel in the city. You could see the Saint Sophia cathedral from our balcony! A literal stone's throw away.
The service is really helpful and nice and they speak good English. The only drawback is the reception is not in the same location as most apartments, but they drive you to the place.
Lovely experience! Would come back for sure.

Compared to my 3 day experience in Ukraine, I'm pleaseed I read trip advisor reviews about Sherborne before I ended up there.
I also had a recommendation from a Business colleague who used to stay in Sherborne regularly. He's been to Ukraine 11 times and stayed in many hotels. According to him the best value for money has been Sherborne.
Most businesses, Taxis, shops don't always deliver what they promise. And you may find that many places are ripoffs.
Sherborne in that sense gives you what you need. Very responsive staff. They even accompany you to the super market to show you the way. Always use the Sherborne taxis to get there from Airport, as you may find out, communicating in English in Ukraine and giving instructions to Taxis in Ukraine is a genuine nightmare.
Always use supermarkets to buy food, waterr and items, as Sherborne charges you 10 times more :-)

One tip I can give you is in Ukraine try and get your host to provide transport, including pick & drop off from Airports.

Room was of good size and cleanliness, with a seperate bed and TV room lounge and a seperate kitchen area.
Laundry is relatively cheap. Cost 16 currency = 2US$ to iron 2 shirts

What wasnt good
The location of my apartment was through the back of some flats that didnt look pretty. Didin't feel very comfortable going through that. However it was safe.
Taxis are very hard to communicate with.

Ordering food is also hard. Once I had to order breakfast and wanted tomoto ketch up I got tomotoe juice instead. And some of the cafeterias have pictures on food items, but when you really get it to consume it may look completely different to the picture. I was told that you could expect these things, All in all most things should be done in utter caution

We chose the Sherborne Guest House based upon the other reviews and the fact that the other 4* hotels in Kiev are over priced. We stayed for 5 nights returning 1st Jan so seeing the New Year in in Ukrainian style.

We got their driver to meet us at the Airport and glad we did as it would have been very difficult for a taxi to find the apartments as the entrance is inside a triangle with other private apartments and no sign posts to direct you there. They called us whilst we were waiting to go through passport control to let us know that he had arrived. This was reassuring as there were lots of people offering taxi services as soon as we came out of customs.

We had a 1 bed apartment on the 4th floor which had a bedroom, lounge, hallway, kitchen and bathroom. The extra space you get with an apartment over a hotel is really good as need more room in winter for the extra clothes. The kitchen was fully equiped and there is a supermarket just around the corner so you can stock up with food as there is a large fridge/freezer. We decided to eat in twice because of the weather (30cm of snow fell in 24 hours) but this allowed us to sample the local Ukrainian food washed down with Vodka. The bathroom was clean and modern. The staff spoke good English and were very helpful. The apartment was cleaned daily and the bed sheets were changed once during our 5 day stay.

High speed internet access is free.

The metro is a 5 minute walk and costs 1.70 HRM per journey (about 15p) and is 2 stops from the city centre. It does get a bit crowded during peak times though. You can walk to the centre in about 25 minutes.

The Lavra (Caves Monestery major tourist attraction) is a 15 minute walk in the opposite direction of the city centre.

I would recommend the Sherborne to anyone who likes a quite location a short distance from the city centre and who does not need the facilities that hotels provide.

A couple of tips - do not drink the water and use bottled water to clean your teeth and bring you own pills for upset stomachs. This is normal for eastern european countries but can make the difference between spoiling your holiday or not.

We stay on a business trip on September 2009. Being in Kiev few times so far I stayed several different places and have to say Sherborne offers just a right value for money. The rooms are full size apartments with separate bedroom and kitchen. This means a lot for extended stay or if you travel with a colleague. The area is residential but it is very central and convenient you have to know Kiev to understand you stay 10 min away from holly Lavra and 15 from Parliament.

I was a little nervous about staying here after the last review posted but I assure you after visiting that the Sherborne Guest House is NOT located in a ghetto, rather it is in a residential neighborhood within walking distance of the Lavra. Not once did I feel uncomfortable going back to our apartment.

We had reserved the $90 1 bedroom apartment which wasn't available so were upgraded for no fee to the incredibly spacious nicely decorated 2 bedroom apartment, back in the communist days it probably housed about 10-15 people. The room was comfortable, there was a full kitchen with refrigerator and stove (plus a minibar) and table. We had a tub and a shower, there was hot water after running the tap for about 3 minutes. The only drawback was that it was on the 5th floor and there is no elevator.

When we came back through Kiev for 1 night, we reserved the $125 apartment which is a studio apartment with the kitchen and the bedroom combined. There was just a shower in this apartment. It was on the 1st floor so no stairs for this apartment. Both apartments were very quiet.

The transfer from the airport was expensive but well worth it after a long flight. The location is off the street and not marked at all (you go through an alley to get to your apartment) so it would be hard to find if you didn't know where you were going. The Arsenala metro station is a 5-10 minute walk and there is a full grocery store about 2 minutes away. We got a whole cooked chicken and some other stuff and ate in our apartment a couple of nights, they also had other prepared foods that they could microwave for you.

The staff couldn't have been nicer, our apartment was cleaned every night with fresh towels, the staff was available 24 hours a day and was just downstairs from our apt. I would highly recommend if you are looking for an affordable option and are willing to stay a little out of the center.
